Let's Go
Ernie Isley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's driving away with the dim lights on
She's making a play and she can't go wrong
She never waits too long
She's winding them down on her clock machine
And she won't give up 'cause she's seventeen
She's a frozen fire
She's my one desire
And I don't want to hold her down
Don't want to break her crown
When she says, let's go
I like the nightlife baby
She says, let's go

She's laughing inside 'cause they can't refuse
She's so beautiful now, she doesn't wear her shoes
She never likes to choose
She's got wonderful eyes and a risque mouth
And when I ask her before, she said she's holding out

She's a frozen fire
She's my one desire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Ernie Isley's song "Let's Go" convey a sense of adventure and spontaneity. The song is driven by a female protagonist who is confident, self-assured, and brimming with youthful energy. The first verse describes her driving away with the dim lights on, ready to make a bold move. She's winding them down on her clock machine, signaling that time is running out and she's eager to seize the moment. Despite being just 17, she's already a force to be reckoned with: a frozen fire that consumes everything in its path. The singer of the song admires her from afar but doesn't want to hold her down or break her crown. Instead, he's content to follow her wherever she leads.

The second verse paints a vivid picture of the female protagonist's persona. She's beautiful, with wonderful eyes and a risque mouth that suggests she's not afraid to speak her mind. The singer has tried to woo her before, but she's always held out, keeping him at arm's length. Despite this, he's still drawn to her magnetic personality and edgy demeanor. She's laughing inside because she knows they can't refuse her, and she doesn't wear shoes because she's too busy living life on her terms. In the chorus, she invites the singer to join her in the nightlife, telling him to let go and experience the same thrill she does.

Great version. Beautifully weird production. EI is a TOTALLY underrated guitar player. You hear his playing in Prince’s soloing.
Both great, great players.

2023, and unfortunately, Ernie knocked this one "Out of the Park"!!!

This version was never released as a single. In 1990, Elektra Records released a 40th anniversary compilation where current Elektra artists covered hits from the back catalogue. It’s called Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary.

The Cure cover The Doors, The Georgia Satellites cover Rocking All Over The World and Ernie covers the Cars. Arguably, the most well known version from this album is the Gypsy Kings covering Hotel California.

@legominator

+Ted MacDonnell don't know.. how bout ya look up let's go by the band the cars? 1978 hit 14 on the top 100

@kenlieck7756

Maybe it gets confused with the Isley Brothers' original song "Let's Go, Let's Go, Let's Go" which must've inspired this cover choice!
