De herdertjes lagen bij nachte
Zij lagen bij nacht in het veld
Zij hielden vol trouwe de wachte
Zij hadden hun schaapjes geteld.
Daar hoorden zij engelen zingen
Hun liederen vloeiend en klaar
′T liep tegen het nieuwe jaar
Toen zij er te Bethlehem kwamen
Daar schoten drie stralen dooreen
The song "De herdertjes lagen bij nachte" tells the story of the shepherds who were keeping watch over their flock by night in the field. They had counted their sheep and were keeping watch over them when they heard the angels singing. The angels' voices were clear and flowing as they sang of the good news that the Messiah had been born. The shepherds were filled with wonder and decided to go to Bethlehem to see the newborn child. The journey to Bethlehem is said to have taken place just before the start of the new year.
Upon their arrival, the shepherds were greeted by a bright star that shone over the stable where Jesus was born. Three rays of light emanated from the star, one of which shone on the baby Jesus in the manger. The shepherds were moved to tears and fell to their knees in awe of the infant Jesus. Saint Joseph, who was there to care for the newborn child, welcomed the shepherds and they were able to pay their respects to the baby.
The song reflects the joy and wonder of the Christmas season as well as the importance of the message of the birth of Jesus. The lyrics and melody are simple yet powerful, and the traditional Dutch Christmas carol has become a beloved part of the holiday season for many.
