Tumbleweed
Esmé Patterson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I turn away so I can't see
The look in your eyes when you make love to me

Well you say you'll be back in the spring
But I need a man, not a tumbleweed

And I keep my dancing shoes on
Long after you're gone

Well you hold me just tight enough
And I spend your money, so you treat me rough

And men will tell me that I burn and shine
But I can't find one that'll treat me kind

And I keep my dancing shoes on
Long after you're gone

Well what about me?
I want to be loved
Yeah, what about me?
I wand to be loved!

Well I might tell you a lie to show
You could know my skin, but there's more to know

And the nights will keep pouring out like beer
You come and go but I'll stay here

And I keep my dancing shoes
Long after you're gone
After you're gone
After you're gone
After you're gone
After you're gone

After you're gone
After you're gone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Esmé Patterson's song "Tumbleweed" speak to the frustrations of a woman who is feeling unfulfilled in a relationship that is not meeting her emotional needs. She turns away from her partner when they make love because she doesn't want to see the lack of feeling in his eyes. The man in question promises to return in the spring, but she feels like she needs a man who is more present and attentive than what she's been getting from him.

The singer has a self-awareness that despite the negatives in her relationship, she still stays with the man as he provides her with some sort of comfort even if it is short term. She complains that men tell her that she "burn and shine" but they aren't kind to her. However, she still enjoys dancing and sees it as a way to express herself, even after the man is gone. Despite everything, she still wants to be loved, and that means finding someone who will treat her with kindness and respect.

The song culminates in her expressing her desire for love and acceptance while telling her partner that he doesn’t see the real her. She’s grown used to his comings and goings, but knows that there is more to her than the physicality of their relationship. Overall, the lyrics are a commentary on the struggles of women in relationships where their emotional needs are not met, and their quest for a deeper connection that satisfies them beyond just a physical component.
