Not if my love can't bind your heart
And there's no need to take a stand
For it was I who chose to start
I see no need to take me home
I'm old enough to face the dawn
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Then slowly turn away
Maybe the sun's light will be dim
And it won't matter anyhow
If morning's echo says we've sinned
Well, it was what I wanted now
And if we're victims of the night
I won't be blinded by the light
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
Then slowly turn away
I won't beg you to stay with me
Through the tears of the day, of the years
Baby, baby, baby
Just call me angel of the morning, (angel)
The lyrics of Esteban's song "Angel of the Morning" tell the story of a woman who has willingly engaged in a casual fling with a man. She haughtily expresses that she is not looking for anything serious, and there is no need for the man to "take a stand" or make any sort of commitment. The singer feels confident that she is not bound by emotional ties and the man is free to leave whenever he wants. She calls herself the "Angel of the Morning," presumably because she is the one who sets the tone of the relationship and decides when it is time for the man to leave. She encourages him to do so "slowly," implying that the physical connection between them was intense.
The woman in the song is unapologetic about her behavior and seems to revel in the superficiality of the arrangement. She acknowledges that it may not last beyond the night and the dawn may bring a sense of regret, but sees no reason to be bound by these emotions. Ultimately, she claims agency over her own life by declaring that she is "old enough" to "face the dawn." This demonstrates that she is not vulnerable to the emotions that come with such fleeting affairs.
