Dean was born in 1981, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, then in her late teens, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska after graduating from Omaha North High School, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, until relocating to Los Angeles, California, where she became a successful songwriter, and was introduced to Polow da Don, and later signed to Zone 4 Records/Interscope Records. During her tenure, Dean has amassed a catalog of songs she has written or co-written for other artists, such as Mary J. Blige, Monica, Keri Hilson, Keyshia Cole, Kelly Rowland, Katy Perry, Trey Songz, Christina Aguilera, Usher, Chris Brown, Teyana Taylor, Nicki Minaj among many others.
In 2009, she recorded and released her first single, "Drop It Low" which features singer Chris Brown, off the LeBron James documentary, More Than a Game, which peaked at #38 on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first US Top 40 single. The song received positive reviews, and the song was remixed by artists such as Lil Wayne, Trey Songz and Diddy. She was featured on Nicki Minaj's song Super Bass, a bonus track for the rapper's debut album Pink Friday. The song was received well, with many fans stating it was better than many of the main tracks, and should've been on the standard album, and was good enough to be a future single.

Since U Been Gone

It was cool but it was all pretend
Yeah yeah
Since you been gone
Your dedicated you took the time
Wasn't long till I called you mine
Yeah yeah
And all you'd ever hear me say
Is how I pictured me with you
That's all you'd ever hear me say
But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get (now I get)
What I want
Since you been gone
How can I put it? you put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah, yeah
Since you been gone
How come I'd never hear you say
I just wanna be with you
I guess you never felt that way
But since you been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so moving on
Yeah, yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get (now I get) what I want
Since you been gone
You had your chance (you had your chance) you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth I just can't take it
Again and again and again and again and again and again
Since you been gone
Since you been gone
Since you been gone
Since you been gone
Since you been gone
The lyrics of Ester Dean's "Since U Been Gone" tell a story of a relationship that started out as just a pretend friendship but eventually turned into something real. The chorus of the song indicates that even though the relationship ended, it was beneficial for the singer's personal growth. The singer can now finally breathe for the first time and has learned to move on, recognizing that they have the power to get what they want.
The second verse of the song reveals the singer's frustrations with their former partner. They felt that they were the only one in the relationship who wanted to be together and were fed up with not hearing the same from their partner. The bridge of the song then takes a harsher tone, with the singer telling their partner that they blew their chance with them and is better off out of sight and out of mind.
Overall, "Since U Been Gone" is a song about personal growth after a relationship ends. It highlights the strength one gains through leaving a relationship that wasn't right for them and how empowering it is to finally move on.
