I'm Nuthin'
Ethan Hawke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a pothead mama, got a cokehead dad.
I'm an ultramodern version of the American man.
I don't feel good, but don't feel bad.
'Cause me you see, I'm nuthin'

Ain't no republicrat, no demmican, they ain't nuthin in between.
I'm sick of people talking about American dreams -that's all gone.
Ain't nothin' there for me cause me you see I'm nuthin'
I ain't left, I ain't right.

People say I'm wrong before I was born.
It was all gone.
Don't even make sense that I wrote this song.
'Cause me you see I'm nuthin, I'm nuthin'

Don't want no big TV or no flashy garage, never would cut it in no corponate job.
People see me coming - they say look at that slob cause me you see

I'm nuthin', I'm nuthin'

Overall Meaning

Ethan Hawke's song "I'm Nuthin" is a self-reflective track that explores the singer's sense of self and his place in society. The singer begins by introducing himself as a product of his parents, a pothead mother and a cokehead father. He then claims to be an "ultramodern version" of the American man, implying that he embodies the values and struggles of contemporary American society.

The singer then rejects traditional political labels, stating that he is "nuthin'" between a republican and a democrat. He also expresses disillusionment with the American Dream, claiming that there is "nuthin'" there for him. He identifies as neither left nor right and feels that he has been judged as "wrong" before he was even born, implying that he is a victim of his circumstances.

Ultimately, the singer expresses a rejection of materialism and consumer culture, rejecting the idea of a "big TV" or a "flashy garage." He feels that he would not fit in with a corporate job and is derided by others as a "slob." Despite these challenges, the singer embraces his identity as "nuthin'" and finds a sense of liberation in his rejection of societal norms and expectations.

@TeamJolie1990

Lately I've been watching 90s movies, TV shows and going through 90s music as well. Everything seems much more normal back then. Same pains but no cellphones at least. Don't get me wrong, I am a 90s kid and I have a cellphone, but I wish there's a reset button. At least. Hope you're well during 2020s.

@courtneyyohe4275

Why can’t things just go back to normal at the end of the half hour like on the Brady bunch or something

@BadApple4Life

@courtneyyohe4275 I can see them passing the can having this convo 🥰

@somethingaccessories

Yeah same. I have watched Singles and Reality Bites too many times lately. Some things resonate more than others.

I lol'd at "you look like a doily" 😂 I've been obsessed with Ethan Hawke since I was a teen. I will NEVER get over the fact that one of my best friends went to NYU with him. She just didn't know it until they called his name at graduation. She mentioned it to her friend and found out he was her friend Ethan from Creative Writing class because SHE didn't know who he was lol
