He is also known as the inventor of the electric rake. This musical instrument (though some would hesitate to call it "musical") is made by attaching a microphone or an electric guitar pickup to an ordinary lawn rake. The sounds that it can produce are impossible to describe.
Chadbourne started out playing rock and roll guitar, but quickly grew bored with the form's conventions. He started studying other genres, including blues, country, bluegrass, free jazz, and noise - eventually synthesizing all those heterogenous influences into a unique style of his own. He was also influenced early on by the experimental stylings of Captain Beefheart and the Mothers of Invention.
Chadbourne has worked with numerous artists including John Zorn, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Carla Bley Band, Paul Lovens, Camper Van Beethoven, Jello Biafra, and Jimmy Carl Black.
While in Canada in the 1970s, he produced and hosted a radio program on Radio Radio 104.5 Cable FM in Calgary, Alberta. His show was notorious for obscure and remarkable music. Radio Radio is now the last quasi-pirate station in Canada.
Chadbourne also fronted Shockabilly (1982-1985) with Mark Kramer (bass/organ) and David Licht (drums), releasing four eclectic albums.
Chadbourne currently resides in Greensboro, NC.
He is sometimes referred to as Dr. Eugene Chadbourne
Once More With Feeling
Eugene Chadbourne Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of the parts we've learned to play
Never quite together like before
But somehow darlin' something good
Got lost along the way
And our song ain't nothing
Special anymore
With feeling darlin', take it from the top
Let me feel those tears a fallin' babe
I don't want to miss a single drop
Darlin' make believe your makin'
Me believe each word you say
Try it once more with feeling
And we'll call it a day
Ah you're reachin' out to touch me
Darlin' just the way you used to do
An you're lookin' everywhere but
In my eyes
Well that's an oldy but it's a goody babe
But them words ain't ringin' true
And you don't seem very sure of your life
So try it one more time with feeling
Darlin' take it from the top
This one is the big one baby so give
It everything you got
Darlin' make believe your makin' me
Believe each word you say
Let's try it once more with feeling
And we'll call it a day
The Eugene Chadbourne's song 'Once More With Feeling' is a song about a couple that is going through the motions in their relationship. They have been performing the same roles for so long that they have lost the passion and feeling that they once had. The chorus suggests that they try one more time to recapture the magic they once shared. The singer wants the other person to pour everything they have into it and make the words and emotions feel authentic.
Throughout the song, the singer encourages the other person to give it their all, to make it seem like they believe in what they are saying, and to try to recapture the feeling they once shared. They want the other person to make them feel something again, to bring back the passion and emotion that they once had. The song speaks to the common experience of relationships losing their spark and the desire to recapture that spark.
