It was released twice; in 1985 as a single from the soundtrack to the Swedish film On the Loose, and in 1986 as the second international single from the album The Final Countdown. The B-side for both releases was a 1985 re-recording of the band's debut single, "Seven Doors Hotel".
The 1986 release became a Top 10 hit in France, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland, and peaked at #12 on the UK Singles Chart and #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the USA. The music video was directed by Nick Morris and shot at the Hard Rock Cafe in Stockholm. It was the first Europe music video that featured the band's new guitarist Kee Marcello, since the original guitarist John Norum had left the band weeks before the video shoot.
The song was included in the 2007 film Hot Rod and the European version of the Nintendo DS game Guitar Hero: On Tour.

Europe Lyrics

I've gone through pain
But there's not enough reason for me to go insane
I know the feeling, when it grows
I'm in a rage up from my head down to my toes
You know it ain't easy
Running out of thrills
When you don't know what you want
Rock now, rock the night
'Til early in the morning light
Rock now, rock the night
You'd better believe it's right
I know my limit
Just what it takes
When things ain't good enough
I just pull the brake
Sometimes it's easy
Sometimes so tough
But just have one thing clear
I can't get enough
The lyrics of Europe's song "Rock the Night" resonate with those who are going through a rough patch in life. The song speaks to the pain and changes that people go through, but there's not enough reason to give up, go crazy or suicidal. The song talks about how hard it is to keep going when you're running out of thrills, and the feeling of not knowing what you want or where you're going in life. Nevertheless, the singer encourages everyone to rock on and rock the night, all the way until dawn, while being confident that it's the right thing to do. He knows his limits and that sometimes it's easy to move forward, but other times it's really tough. However, he makes it clear that he can't get enough and will keep going.
