Smells Like Teen Spirit
Europe vs. Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over-bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey, yay

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido
Yeah, hey, yay

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it's hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind

Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello, how low
Hello, hello, hello

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido

A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial
A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

Overall Meaning

The song Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana is a timeless classic of the grunge rock era of the early 1990s. It is also one of the most defining songs of the era, with its angst-ridden lyrics and abrasive instrumentation. The opening lines of the song, “Load up on guns, bring your friends, it's fun to lose and to pretend” sets the tone for the song, which is essentially about nihilism and apathy.

The lyrics suggest a sense of boredom and disillusionment with life, as well as a willingness to embrace self-destructive behavior. The repetition of the phrase “Hello, hello, hello, how low” suggests a sense of repetition, as well as a feeling of being trapped in a cycle of meaninglessness. The line “Here we are now, entertain us” can be seen as a commentary on the disaffection of youth in the 1990s, who were disillusioned with mainstream society and its values.

The chorus, with its repetition of “A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido” seems almost nonsensical, but it is actually a reference to the different races and ethnic backgrounds that make up American society. The line “I feel stupid and contagious” captures the sense of alienation and loneliness that many young people felt at the time. Overall, Smells Like Teen Spirit captures the rebellious spirit of the grunge era and remains a timeless classic of the genre.

Damn, this is way ahead of its time.

By then we will all be dead... or at the very least, music will sound very different from anything we listen to today. It would be like the difference between baroque and rock & roll. But I think a more conservative estimate of a hundred or so years seems realistic. It will be popular in the 2110s.... ;)

@davesmith8341

Chaos Omega though there isn’t that big of a difference between baroque and rock (or metal)🤔take malmsteen and power metal for example
