Beethoven
Eurythmics Lyrics

Listen to

I love to listen to
I love to listen to
I love to
Take a girl like that and put her in a natural setting like a cafe for example.
Along comes the boy and he's looking for trouble with a girl like that, with a girl like that.
Who knows what they'll decide to do? Who knows what they'll get up to?
I'd love to know, wouldn't you?

[Chorus 1:]
I love to, I love to listen to
Love to, I love to listen to
I love to, I love to listen to
Love to, I love to

[Chorus 2:]
I love to listen to Beethoven
I love to listen to Beethoven
I love to listen to Beethoven
I love to

You think you know just what you want but you have used that weapon against me.
Did I tell you I was lying by the way when I said I wanted a new mink coat?
I was thinking of something sleek to wrap around my tender throat.
I was dreaming like a Texan girl. A girl who thinks she's got the right to everything.
A girl who thinks she should have something extreme.

I love to listen to
I love to listen to
I love to listen to
I love to

[Chorus 2: x5]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Eurythmics' "Beethoven" are open to interpretation. On one level, the song tells a story of a boy and a girl who meet in a cafe and who may or may not end up together. On a deeper level, the song is a commentary on the role of the listener in music. The chorus consists of the phrase "I love to listen to," repeated over and over, to the point where it becomes a mantra. This suggests that the act of listening is just as important as the act of creating music.

The verses provide an interesting contrast to the chorus. In the first verse, the singer describes a girl in a cafe who is being pursued by a boy. The lyrics are ambiguous as to whether or not the boy and girl will actually end up together. The second verse is more introspective. The singer describes herself as a liar who wants a mink coat, but who is really dreaming of something more extreme. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, suggesting that the act of listening to music can provide an escape from the complexities of real life.

Thank God for the Eurythmics. ❤

They are truly one of the world's greatest musical artists, in my opinion. And Savage is one of their best (and sadly, least appreciated) discs.

Annie losing her marbles…just fabulous!

@tigerpournelle1020

Oh man that power walk at the end is EVERYTHING.

@carstenkimmel7720

And a total misunderstanding for you. Annie once asked says 'she turns from one monster into another-she cannot free herself from herself'. Again, she is a victim of men-this time rough men. 'I need a man' is no song of sexual freedom-it is actually the exact opposite...

@VeraHannaford

Her posture is everything.

Where did she get that dress?

@trevorsommers3094

@@carstenkimmel7720 Yes, alas, this “monster” isn’t a victim.

@carstenkimmel7720

@@trevorsommers3094 She is again a victim of a wrong perception of herself. Again she will be unhappy, desperate lost, desillusioned-and not free at all. 'You have placed a chill in my heart' points to that. Never underestimate the deliberate big part of kitsch in her transvestite 'I need a man' performance-she just needs a man-its not that she gets one. If she is free it would read 'I don't need a man'.
