The song has been covered by several musical artists, including Brittany Murphy, Fantastic Plastic Machine, Leningrad Cowboys, Luciano Pavarotti, Kylie Minogue, Jessica G. Pilnäs and German girl group No Angels, who obtained their second number-one single in Austria and Germany with their rendition for the reissue of their album Elle'ments in August 2001.
Upon its release, "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)" became Eurythmics' first (and to date only) number-one single in the United Kingdom, reaching number one on 27 July 1985, whilst also topping the charts in Finland, Ireland and Norway. The song also reached the top 10 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, while peaking at number 22 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Cash Box said that the "Annie Lennox harmonies, slick Dave Stewart production work and Stevie Wonder's incredible harmonica" were highlights of the song. Billboard similarly praised Wonder's harmonica bridge and Lennox’s "absolutely happy" lead vocals.
The music video for "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)", directed by Eddie Arno and Mark Innocenti, was shot at New Wimbledon Theatre in London in June 1985. It portrays the times of Louis XIII of France (David A. Stewart) being entertained while watching a theatre performance of singing angels (one of which is played by Steven O'Donnell).

I'm thrown and overflown with bliss
There must be an angel
Playing with my heart
I walk into an empty room
And suddenly my heart goes boom
It's an orchestra of angels
(Must be talking to an angel)
No one on earth could feel like this
I'm thrown and overflown with bliss
There must be an angel
Playing with my heart
And when I think that I'm alone
It seems there's more of us at home
It's a multitude of angels
And they're playing with my heart
(Must be talking to an angel)
I must be hallucinating
Watching angels celebrating
Could this be reactivating
All my senses dislocating
This must be a strange deception
By celestial intervention
Leavin' me the recollection
Of your heavenly connection
I walk into an empty room
And suddenly my heart goes boom
It's an orchestra of angels
And they're playing with my heart
The lyrics of Eurythmics's song "There Must Be an Angel" describes the feeling of overwhelming joy and ecstasy, but attributes it to being caused by the presence of an angel playing with the singer's heart. The first verse describes how no one on earth could feel the way the singer does, and the second verse elaborates on the feeling by describing an empty room suddenly filling up with an orchestra of angels, playing with the singer's heart. The chorus reiterates the idea of an angel being the source of this joy.
The third verse hints at a sense of disbelief, as the singer questions their own senses and wonders if they are hallucinating. However, ultimately, they come to the conclusion that this feeling must be a "celestial" intervention and that it is leaving them with the memory of a "heavenly connection." The song ends with a repetition of the second chorus, with the singer walking into an empty room and feeling overwhelmed by the presence of the angelic orchestra.
Overall, the lyrics suggest a belief in the idea of divine intervention and the possibility of experiencing a connection with a celestial being. The song's message can be interpreted in different ways, depending on one's personal beliefs and experiences.

Perhaps it is because autotune wasn't even invented when the song was recorded.
@CamPalinSmith
Her voice sounds even better on vinyl. Got every Eurythmics LP (barn their debut and the last one) on vinyl. Fantastic, especially the 'Savage' album.
