7 Seconds
Eurythmics feat. Youssou N’Dour Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't see me from a distance
Don't look at my smile
And think that I don't know
What's under and behind me
I don't want you to look at me
And think
What's in you is in me
What's in me is to help them
I assume the reasons that push us to
Change everything
I would like us to forget about
Their color
So they can be optimistic
Too many views on rave that make them
Desperate
Let's leave the doors wide open
So they can talk about their pain
And joy
Then we can give them information
That will bring us all together
It's not a second
7 seconds away
Just as long as I stay
I'll be waiting
Nothing can move us, we should
Be moving
From the ones who practice wicked
Charms
For the son and the stone
Bad to the bone
Man is not evil, even when it's born
And when a child is born into this world
It has no concept
The tone the skin is living in
It's not a second
7 seconds away
Just as long as I stay
I'll be waiting
There's a million voices
There's a million voices

To tell you what she should be thinking
So you better sober up for just a second

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eurythmics feat. Youssou N’Dour's song 7 Seconds touches on the theme of race and how it affects perceptions and interactions between people. The first verse speaks to the danger of prejudging someone based on their appearance or smile and the need for people to look beyond the surface to truly understand others. The lyrics then delve into the desire for people to forget about color and focus on unity by giving others the space to share their pain and joy. However, the song expresses the challenge of achieving this goal due to the many divisive views that exist in society.

The chorus of the song introduces the idea that change can come in just seconds and that patience and understanding are required to achieve this change. The lyrics then shift to talk about the power of knowledge and information to bring people together and bridge differences. The final verse delves into the idea that people are not born evil and that it is society that influences them. The lyrics express the need for people to sober up and listen to the many voices that exist in society to understand others better.

I'm torn here - It's hard not to give this amazing song a thumbs up every time I hear it but Annie realky didn't do it as well as Nenah does. Still, better sung than not sung so I certainly can't give it a thumbs down :-)

Neneh's version is unbeatable. But I thought this was up to Neneh's interpretation. That's certainly one of the best covers I've watched on YouTube.

Oh no, poor Annie, she stuffed the words up and stumbles through part of her lines at around @3:50. She sings "...to tell you what you think you better sober up - stumbles - for just a second" when the line should be "...to tell you what you should be thinking so you better sober up for just a second."

I noticed it because I am a singer myself and this stuff happens. You have to try and cover yourself as much as you can and keep on going with the song. Seeing Annie do it makes me feel better haha
