Autumn Leaves
Eva Cassidy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eva Cassidy's song 'Autumn Leaves' speaks of bittersweet memories of a past love that still lingers, especially during the autumn season when leaves start to fall. The opening lines set the scene with falling leaves drifting by the singer's window, and the colors of autumn - red and gold. The next verse reveals that the singer is thinking of their past love when they see the sunburned hands they used to hold and remember the summer kisses they shared. The refrain repeats the lines 'But I miss you most of all my darling when autumn leaves start to fall,' and it is here where the yearning for the past love becomes more intense. The last verse acknowledges the reality that the person has gone away and left the singer to face the long days, with the impending winter heralded by the old winter's song.

The song has a melancholic tone, which perfectly suits the theme of nostalgia and longing. Eva Cassidy's beautiful rendition of the song adds a haunting quality that resonates with listeners. The slow and steady tempo, orchestral arrangements, and the beautiful evocative lyrics combine to create an emotional connection that is hard to ignore. The song speaks to anyone who has loved and lost, and the memories that can be triggered by a smell or a sound, or in this case, the autumn season.

It's been 1 year since my wife passed. Autumn was her favorite time for us to take walk through the forest just holding hands. Eva's beautiful and emotional interpretation of the lyrics brings comforting memories. May your both rest in peace.

Autumn Leaves is a jazz standard, covered by countless musicians and singers. So often it's done in an up-tempo swing style. Eva's rendition is soul-wrenching in its expression of love and loss. It immediately made me realize that no one has ever performed this the way it needed to be performed — this is what the song is really about, and it should always be done like this.

And it should be mentioned that the piano interlude is brilliant in the shape of its line, its reworking of the melody, its building to successive high points — a perfect complement to Eva's impeccable voice and arrangement.

This is truly a perfect performance. You could not change a note of it.
