The Water Is Wide
Eva Cassidy Lyrics

The water is wide I can not get o'er,
And neither have I wings to fly,
Give me a boat that will carry two,

O love is handsom and love is fine,
And love's a jewel when it's first new,
But love grows old then waxes gold,
And fades away like morning dew,

There is a ship it's sailing the sea,
It's loaded deep as deep can be,
But not so deep as the love I'm in,
I know not if I sink or swim,

The water is wide I can not get o'er,
And neither have I wings to fly,
Give me a boat that will carry two,
And both shall row my love and I,
And both shall row my love and I,

The water is wide
I cannot get o'er
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row my love and I

O love is handsome and love is fine
And love's a jewel while its first new
But love grows old, and waxes gold
And fades away like morning dew

There is a ship, its sailing the sea
It's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as my love for him
I know not if I sink or swim

The water is wide
I cannot get o'er
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row my love and I

And both shall row my love and I 🌹

A bit of info !!! xoxox...
I'm a folk musician, (guitarist), and play this version by Eva all the time, with an accomplished singer!!
Not many people may know, that THIS song, ("The Water Is Wide"), is a Spin-Off from "Carrickfergus".

'Carrickfergus' is about a bit of a Rover/Lad who is not in great health, but has found his way back to
the shores, and is trying to find someone who can ferry him home, (to Carrickfergus) before he dies...
Here's the original words from the song... "Carrickfergus"......

I wish I was in Carrickfergus
Only for nights in Ballygrand
I would swim over the deepest ocean
Only for nights in Ballygrand
But the sea is wide and I cannot swim over
And neither have I the wings to fly
I wish I had a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over my love and I

My childhood days bring back sad reflections
Of happy times there spent so long ago
My boyhood friends and my own relations
Have all past on now with the melting snow
So I'll spend my days in this endless roving
Soft is the grass and shore, my bed is free
Oh to be home now in carrickfergus
On the long rode down to the salty sea

Now in Kilkenny it is reported
On marble stone there as black as ink
With gold and silver I would support her
But I'll sing no more now til I get a drink
Cause I'm drunk today and I'm seldom sober
A handsome rover from town to town
Ah but I'm sick now my days are number
Come all me young men and lay me down
Come all me young men and lay me down.

Here is the best version of 'Carrickfergus', by the Dubliners......

@Peter van Kan My friend, I believe you are right!! Never too late to eat Humble-Pie :-)
I referenced the following links, (and more complex than I thought)......

It's funny how one can 'play' something for years, without grasping the facts, haha :-)
Thanks for your correction mate! Glenn. Western Australia.

My favorite singer of all-time - no one else is even close - I never tire of her sweet voice !!!

Steve; I agree 100%; she is truly an angel from heaven, whom god sent to us to show what true/caring love really is. She is well beyond anyone I have ever listed to in my 83 years on this planet

comkid

Mine too. The one and only.

Richard Hayes

Most assuredly..

OMG, this blew me away once again. I stumble to find the words to describe my feelings right now. But maybe, this needs no words. Everyone who feels and loves music will enjoy this as much as I do

And this is a live performance by Eva both singing and self-accompanying on guitar. She is just peerless whilst still being so real. She had SUCH a rare and pure gift for song interpretation and could sing any style, yet make it her own. We are lucky she recorded so much of her work before she was so cruelly taken.

Beautiful Scots song covered by many artists ,,,Eva's voice is that of an Angel..

I absolutely treasure Eva Cassidy’s timeless voice. Her voice pitch tone and timing echos so beautifully and touches my very soul. It is so pure and sweet and brings tears to my eyes. So thankful for this new found treasure to pick me up when I’m feeling down.

- Fantastisk röst. Så sensitive och så stark. Får mig så känslosam som ingen annan. Den finaste ballad, den starkaste gospel och den blåaste blues. Profant - sakralt. Eva glänser. Det bästa jag hört alla tider!

elisesmyly: This is exactly the way I feel!!
