She had a diverse repertoire of jazz, blues, folk, gospel and pop. Cassidy remained virtually unknown outside of her native Washington, DC, when she died of melanoma (which had spread to her bones) in 1996. Her posthumously released recordings have since sold in excess of four million copies, and in early 2001 the compilation album Songbird reached #1 on the UK album charts.

Eva Cassidy was the third of four children born to Hugh and Barbara Cassidy. From an early age, she displayed artistic and musical talent. When she was nine years old, her father taught her to play the guitar, and she began to play and sing at family gatherings.

While a student at Bowie High School, she did sing with a local band, called Stonehenge, and received considerable praise.

At the age of eighteen, Cassidy began her professional career, singing and playing guitar in a Washington, D.C., area band, called Easy Street. This band performed in a variety of styles, at weddings, corporate parties, and pubs.

During the summer of 1983, Cassidy sang and played guitar, six days per week, at Wild World, in Maryland. Her brother Dan was also a member of this working band.

Throughout the 1980s, Cassidy worked with a number of other bands, including the soul and Motown-oriented band The Honeybees, and the techno-pop band Characters Without Names, later called Method Actor.

During this period, Cassidy also worked as a propagator at a plant nursery and as a furniture painter in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1986, she met (bassist and recording engineer) Chris Biondo, who encouraged her and helped her find work as a backup singer for various acts. In 1990, Biondo and Cassidy hired the so-called "Eva Cassidy Band", composed of Chris Biondo, Lenny Williams, Keith Grimes and Raice McLeod, and she began to perform frequently in the Washington area.

In 1992, Biondo played a tape of Cassidy's voice for Chuck Brown. Best known as the "Godfather of Go-go", Brown is also a jazz and blues vocalist. This led to the first commercial recording of Cassidy, the duet album with Chuck Brown, The Other Side; which featured performances of classic songs such as "Fever", Billie Holiday's "God Bless the Child" and Cassidy's signature tune "Over the Rainbow". The album was released and distributed by Liaison Records, the label that also released Brown's Go-go albums. The duet CD attracted the attention of various record companies, but the offers all required Cassidy to pigeonhole herself within a single style (e.g., pop or jazz), something she adamantly refused to do.[citation needed]

In 1993 Eva Cassidy was first honored by the Washington area music community when she was awarded two Wammie awards for "Female Vocalist Roots/Traditional R&B" and "Vocalist Jazz/Traditional." The next year she was chosen to perform for the awards ceremony.

In January 1996, Cassidy recorded the album Live at Blues Alley, about which The Washington Post later commented that "she could sing anything and make it sound like the only music that mattered". [1] Cassidy was unhappy with her singing on the album, because she had a bad cold on the night of the recording; she began recording a studio album which was eventually released as Eva by Heart posthumously in 1997.

During a promotional event for the Live at Blues Alley CD in July 1996, Cassidy noticed an ache in her hips, which she attributed to stiffness from painting murals. The pain persisted, and, a few weeks later, Cassidy was diagnosed with melanoma. By the time of her diagnosis, the cancer had spread throughout her body. Cassidy's health rapidly deteriorated, and her final performance was in September 1996. At the performance, she had used a walker to reach the stage, sang "What a Wonderful World" in front of an audience of friends, and was subsequently admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital.[citation needed]

Eva Cassidy died on November 2, 1996, at the age of 33. She was posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Washington Area Music Association.

She's is very soulful! What I really love is that she kept it jazzy, adding a touch of blues towards the end and totally understated! appreciate that in a singer. She has major chops! She could have taken thevgospel and R&B routes because she has the range or chops to do that, but she didn't!. This song was written as a jazz standard and she kept it true to the way it was written, melody first! I digg her for that. I sing this song and it's pretty in and of itself, doesn't need a lot of rifts and runs! She's got a new fan!

I play flute, and Eva is my number one teacher. The dynamics, when to use vibrato, etc. My whole musical goal in life is to be able to play any of her songs and come close to the dynamics. That's makes the whole thing. My biggest problem, besides that I'm not good, is that all her songs are in a key to low for the flute range, so I have to either play them in a higher octave, which misses the point and sounds terrible, or transpose the sheet music a bit higher so it still sounds like her song. BUT THEN, finding a good backing track in the new key in Eva's style is nearly impossible. But all in all, I love, love, love listening to her, and I content myself with that, and the hope that I can learn from her dynamics and how she handles each note so incredibly lovingly. Thank you flat5sharp11 - we are on the same page.

I only discovered Eva Cassidy recently when she showed up as a recommendation in my feed. The song was Autumn Leaves and once I listened, I was hooked and changed forever. I then listened to her rendition of Over the Rainbow. My God...the angelic pureness of her voice, her ability to give each song new life and make them uniquely her own. She can touch my soul in a way no other singer can. What a shame that she was taken from us so young. I picture her in heaven with her guitar, sweetly singing, with the angels all sitting around her in pure rapture.

She is one of the few singers I see using contrasts in her voice and performance. What makes her songs so powerful is that she's very moderate in what she does. She could've belted out all those notes but instead we hear these whisper-like notes, then she gradually switches to her powerful voice... :) Just a thing I noticed recently. I am so thankful to see these new videos (this and the Nightbird one). Thank you, millions of thanks, really. If it were my b-day, I would've considered this the most beautiful present possible -- this, or a guitar would probably be as valuable to me as well, to be honest. I am such a great fan, I know almost all of her songs (I daresay there are a few that went unnoticed) but I listened to her albums and I myself sing her songs. She's just my idol, as silly as that sounds. In a time when I didn't knew myself as a singer, Eva gave me a lot of inspiration that contributed to what I am today (musically speaking). We are blessed to have had the chance to listen to such a voice, and more and more lists should start including her in the top female voices, female guitarists etc. Unfortunately there are few people who appreciate her guitar playing, but what she does on guitar is just as beautiful. Also, the band members and those who came up with these arrangements should get some credit as well. The sound of the band overall is very good. It shows the compositions were well thought of.

She had a very special talent. Besides her obvious vocal chops, her creativity in reconstructing songs, altering melody and timing, is amazing. She never over does it, and when she does do it, it's so tasteful and never seems forced. It almost as if she's improvising but I'm sure she rehearsed every single note and phrase till perfect.

Breathtaking live performance, not only by Eva but supported perfectly by the band. Her display of dynamic control and phrasing here shows exactly what she had. @Bob Kallberg she's a good singer I like what she did with the tune creatively speaking and from a musical standpoint, but the ending she kinda went into blues riffs and not jazz riffs she had done throughout most of the tune, Many singers do that and I guess it's ok. I love it when singers sing traditional jazz as traditional jazz start too end. Blues has its place and it works on this tune but for me there are a million different endings that could've been utilized beautifully here. I've also seen Ella in the early 70's, Sarah at Blue Note in the 80, Mel Torme at Carnegie Hall, Betty Carter, Annie Ross, John Hendrix, Ray Charles, Abby Lincoln, and the best of the best I grew up with this music at home. My family has amazing singers and musicians. I'm no expert by no stretch of the imagination. When folks start claiming singers are in the same category as mentioned singers...well that's a pretty far stretch respectfully! When I hear singers like Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, Cecile McLaren Salvant, Jazzmeia Horn, and Brianna Thomas well....they are in that same category and has studied jazz on a whole from Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Mama Rainey, Bessie Smith. I'll give Ava a good job, though.The overall feeling, phrasing, note choice is good, but the ending could've been more with the traditional jazz phrasing which she did upfront in the tune. I will explore more of her music. I've only heard her on that one tune while browsing YouTube, and I saw your comment I did enjoy her for sure and will check her out on other songs. Saw Ella in Chicago in the 60's, and Sassy was always a favoite. Eva ranks up there with those singers, and her take on this is among the best I've heard.

So many years ago, my bass player handed me a cassette tape of Live at Blues Alley. As a singer myself, I was always asked who my favorite singer was... and there is no real answer for that. But from that point on, Eva became the answer to many a question. She delivers pure raw perfect vocals no matter the song, no matter the genre; Blues, Jazz, rock, Gospel. Blue Note blew it big time when they wouldn't let her make the album she wanted to make. She refused to be put in a box. Emotions aren't wrapped in a box, they need to be expressed many ways. The best singers feel all emotions and can deliver them all. She expressed them all, in her delivery, her writings and her paintings.

An incredibly beautiful song, sung by such a lovely, talented lady! This is a favorite song of mine and her version sends shivers down my back, it's so touching! I would have loved to hear Eva in person, -- such a "wow" artist, you have to forgive her for skewing the lyrics!

It is always such a pleasure when a video of her singing the song pops up - she is just so modest and understated - so into her craft - so different than what "music" has morphed into today - Long ago it was said that women used to get drunk laying on the sofa listening to Nina Simone; in more current books and in quotes, it seems that they are now listening to Eva Cassidy. I listen to her when i want to be in a really relaxed, peaceful mood - often while doing work at home.

I have studied (tried to mimic) Eva’’s rendition of Y”You’ve changed vocal line on guitar for many years”. I’ve recently listed to Ella’s and Billiei’s versions. Eva’s is the sweetest. Her predecessors are rich in texture and they are all great.

What an incredible "songbird" she was -- This is hauntingly beautiful -- almost my favorite song, many do it, and Eva skips/changes 5 words in the first phrase, but I think her's is still the best, it's just hauntingly beautiful, it's so sad she had to die so soon, what a tragic end, she is terribly missed, what a talent. Nikki Yanofsky does the next best version of this beautiful song. (Great piano interlude on Eva's version, she played piano and guitar and sang, remarkable talent!)

Oh my gawd! Is this really happening? I'm seeing her for the first time doing this. Been a fan since 2001 when I first cam across her and became an avid supporter. Her cousin, was it Laurie (?) had this memorial webpage and I believe I was on the first 100 pages. That grew to thousand pages and was sadly deleted/broke.

Many sang this song -- about 50, (Dick Haymes 1941, Frankie Laine in 1944) before Billie Holiday in 1958, and many after. But Billie did sing it well. Other lovely versions are by Ella, Sarah Vaughan, Nikki Yanoffsky is exceptional, Julie London, et al., and the great Nat King Cole-1947 was one of the early ones to make this song popular, (I love Nancy Wilson's version) and today, others still do it, including me! But no one can touch Eva's version for true visceral feeling! And talent, range, well, she can do with her trio what many cannot with an entire orchestra and all the gimmicks! Eva is all around best.

I LOVE THIS WOMAN !! We were both born in 1963, she was a once in a lifetime talent !! ( We were just 33 when she passed in 1996) ..I am now 56 and will always turn on the " kids " of today, letting them know who Eva is !
