Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Evancho Jackie's song "Nessun Dorma" narrate the story of a prince who awaits a triumphant victory in war in order to win the hand of his love, the princess. The first verse presents the princess as if isolated in a cold room gazing at the stars that she cherishes with love and hope. The second verse presents the prince as a mystery and a secret to everyone, protecting his identity so that nobody could use it against him in his fights. Moreover, he discloses his name only after his success, when the light shines upon him, and his silence will be broken upon a kiss that he shares with his love. The chorus is a plea to the night to disappear and for the stars to set, as this will be the time when the prince will emerge victorious.

Jackie is a living miracle. This performance is beyond stunning. Her voice is in perfect tune, she has beautiful musical interpretation, her voice is pure, and her diction is excellent...In Italian. I have heard this girl sing in Latin, French, Italian and English...Folks...She was 11 years old for this performance! There is no praise high enough for this angel!

@Rosaire Dubrule If you mean Barbara Bonney, soprano b.1956, there is a definite resemblance [other than Bonney's fast vibrato, since Jackie has slowed hers down to Classical crossover and all other.

Barbara also has beautiful overtones, but not too many are audible so she sounds bell-like. [I use a Frequency Analyzer which is a much broader ranged tool to look at the overtones.]

Folks, she is every bit as marvelous a singer as she was here, but now with a stage presence and confidence that allows her to move between genres with skill and grace. I would argue that, throughout the world, there are many men and women who sing beautifully, but they'll never see the money they could have made singing mainstream songs that get radio play. I read somewhere that 80% of all the music purchased is purchased by people between the ages of 15 to 25. And the people in that age bracket rarely listen to Opera and they sure don't buy it. That's all I'm saying.
For every Luciano Pavarotti or Sarah Brightman, there are a hundred others who won't make much money singing Operas.
It's just not that popular.

To those who say her voice is not good enough for opera, if her voice makes you feel anything, then she is a gift. Not all singers can move people’s feelings in that way! Your opinion may be valid on technique and whatever, but don’t trash her.

Jackie has brought audiences to their feet in tears singing opera, because they have no expectations of her to measure up to the demands of operatic technique. Placido Domingo and other opera singers have performed/recorded contemporary love songs with no demands upon them to sing with other than their operatic voices. An aria sung outside the opera house as a concert piece may be performed by any artist in his/her particular vocal style. Jackie is a phenomenon (prodigy) who has never had an intention to appeal to the internet critics who's classical sensibilities seem threatened. David Foster said in the "The Making of Dream With Me" that she would "get flack for recording Nessun Dorma, but those people won't buy the album anyway". Let them complain. Their criticisms are irrelevant, unless they can't stifle the compulsion to be rude and disrespectful of Jackie, as many have been in the past.

This is a beautiful rendition of my favorite from Italian opera. But it was hearing Pavarotti sing it for my first time that made me fall in love with him, and then opera. How wonderful to have the pleasure of two such magnificent singers in this world.

When I see "GREAT PERFORMANCES" and think that this concert is performed by an 11 year old child, I am choked up at what a phenomenal achievement that is. What's more, it's the first of 3 concerts she had performed for PBS within a 4 year period. Whatever criticisms her detractors use to discredit her, it cannot be denied that Jackie's history as a classical crossover artist is unprecedented and speaks to her prodigious talent. At age 19 now, Jackie is the most versatile young soprano artist today, with 8 consecutive albums to hit #1 on the Classical chart, and still exploring her potential.

This child of 11 has never had voice training, just some performance coaching, yet she delivers 15 songs of equal brilliance in this her first of 3 concerts for PBS, the next at age 12 and again at age 14 still with no training. She exemplifies the definition of "child prodigy". And, she has an endearing personality and admirable character acknowledged among the 5 "best mannered people" of 2011.

@vjhreeves It says she 'started taking voice lessons", but neither she nor her parents have said that. She received voice coaching from Yvie Burnett while on AGT as required, but later she and her parents rejected voice training, concerned that it would destroy her unique soprano tone and the qualities that made her special. Her mother coached her through her childhood years and made sure she saw a specialist periodically to ensure her vocal chords were protected. She began seeing renown voice coach, Joan Lader, in New York to help develop the "pop side of my voice", she said, having discovered it while recording the latest album, The Debut, and to make sure her voice remains healthy. So, she has never had formal voice training.

I had no idea a child could sing like this. I really enjoyed listening to her, and she has a lovely, ungrating voice. Which is more than I can say for some professionals . . .to my ear.
And such a lovely girl and perfect costume.
I enjoyed it so much because the voice is lovely, but that it wasn't rushed and she doesn't force it. I do not like belting singing. It was a pleasure to hear this iconic song soaring instead of bellowing.
Absurd song for a child to sing, especially a girl, but just wonderful.

It's been a few years since Jackie performed Nessun Dorma but she recently brought it out again during a concert at the State Theatre in Easton, PA. Too bad no one captured the moment for posterity. Hopefully she'll do it again when some cameras are rolling.

At this point in her career--put on hold by the pandemic--Jackie has sung Nessun Dorma so many times she can probably do it in her sleep. But this was such a mighty performance at age 11. Watch the way she winds up for each utterance of "vincero!" And then gives us a fourth "vincero" as a bonus. As David Foster has said, "Jackie never disappoints."

This production is huge and the faith that someone placed on her was astronomical. That anyone could arrange a production around an 11 year old speaks volumes. Ms. Evancho can't be measured, this is beyond the scales of talent.

Six years ago, come summertime, I was about to give up all hope of finding a program worth watching on TV when I heard a PBS announcer talking about another of their great performances concerts starting in a few minutes. So, thinking that most of those I had seen were pretty good, I stuck around. What followed was Jackie Evancho performing the most incredibly beautiful and flawless vocal concert I had ever seen and heard, and the only one in my 77 years that actually moved me to tears.

@Richard Connelly I'm only 38 & as a musician, I don't discriminate any music. So long as it's music, I'll play anything. I actually started out playing gospel & classical. Living in Nashville, TN I've played country, classic rock, & even did some hip hop&rap. Though I love my slipknot, avenged sevenfold, etc &metal remains my go to favorite, I still can't deny a good song in any genre. I especially can't deny talented singers.

Nessum Dorma is my all time favorite of Evancho's--she has other good ones; however, this is the best. I will attend her concert in Costa Mesa, Ca at Segerstrom Hall both December 14 and 15 as well as McCallum Theater in Palm Springs, Ca January 11, 2019, This will be my 9th concert--just a little obsessed!!
