Evanescence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Long lost words whisper slowly to me
Still can't find what keeps me here
And all this time I've been so hollow inside

(And I know you're still there)

Watching me
Wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you
Loving you
I know I'll find you somehow

Hunting you
I can smell you
alive
Your heart pounding in my head

Calling me
Killing me
I won't let you pull me down
Saving me
Raping me
Watching me

(Watching me
Wanting me
I can feel you hold me down
Fearing you
Loving you
I won't let you hold me down)

Watching me
Wanting me
I can feel you pull me down
Fearing you

Loving you
I won't let you hold me down

Overall Meaning

The song "Origin" by Evanescence is a haunting and intense portrayal of a struggle with inner demons. The first line of the song, "Long lost words whisper slowly to me," suggests a sense of desperation and a longing to find meaning and purpose. The next line, "Still can't find what keeps me here," highlights a feeling of emptiness and detachment from oneself and the world. The chorus of the song speaks of two opposing forces – one that seeks to pull the singer down and another that promises to save them.

The lyrics suggest a constant battle between the positive and negative aspects of the self. The singer is both afraid of and drawn to the dark side, represented by the line "I can feel you pull me down" and "Fearing you, loving you". However, in the face of this inner turmoil, the singer vows to resist the pull of darkness and find a way out. Even though they feel trapped and almost raped by their negative thoughts and feelings, the singer doesn't want to give in and be held down.

Overall, "Origin" is a powerful song that captures the struggle of the human psyche to overcome negativity and find hope and lightness within oneself.

@NightsXGames no.. they just went older. The reason why the lyrics changed, where no where to be find in Ben's splitting from the band.
Also it has nothing to do with their decision to leave that Christianity rock bullshit lable aside..

It's because when you get older, you think that these lyrics are cringe... don't get me wrong, I love fallen and I live origin, but just let us be serious for a moment.. origin is the ultimate symbol for teenage angst and no one can feel my pain cringe. It's well written and very good produced cringe, but especially from. The perspective of the writer, these lyrics are pure puberty and pain.

So if puberty and pain are the two main ingredients for these lyrics and you are thinking that they should have stayed like this 4 ever, tell me..

Do you want them to stay in puberty for ever or do you want them to feel never ending pain?
The reson why they changed their sound is because bem left and yeah, that's sad, but what should they do about it? But the reason why the lyrics and the style itself changed never had anything to do with commercial product design, but with getting older and moving on. The songs for fallen where written between Amy's 14 and 19 birthday.. the most of them before she went 18. You must be very young to not understand the difference between the feelings and the mindset of a person under 18 and a person over 20. The second album came when she was 25, so between some of the lyrics there wherefore than 10 years of time. It's absolutely clear that she changed. It wouldn't be normal the other way around

Man, every pre-Fallen song by Evanescence is a pure masterpiece. I love how operatic and gothic this song in particular is. Perfection.

Harben 🌻

This one's definitely a great song. Do you know if it's somewhere in Spotify? Its been my favorite for years but its kinda hard to find :(

Agreed to both of you

Eve

@Harben 🌻Unfortunately no :(

SladesGirl

They should really re-release this album now. I imagine it would fly off the shelves with how they've risen in popularity again. I definitely would love a remastered version of Origin!

Silent Konami

If I remember correctly Amy lee didnt like the album herself and considering a big part of evanescence is gone considering Ben left I think that same edge

Liebling

This song has strong Christian psychological underpinnings to it, and I suspect it makes the remaining band members uncomfortable. They moved away from that explicitly religious theme once Ben left in the schism.

NightsXGames

@Liebling yep when they decided mainstream popularity was more important than good music. Their stuff hasn't been the same since. Which is fine, that's their choice, but the music did suffer for it after Origin and Fallen.

@NightsXGames lol ok
