She was born in Hungary to professional musician parents who toured worldwide. Educated in Switzerland, she studied piano before joining her parents on tour as The Three Hugos. When World War II was declared, the family left England with the Boswell Circus. She married, and as Eve Boswell became a popular singing star in South Africa.
In 1949, she was heard by bandleader Geraldo (Gerald Bright), who persuaded her to return to the United Kingdom as a singer in his band, which was widely heard on BBC Radio. Boswell parted with Geraldo in 1952, and launched a solo career. Her first hit record came that year with "Sugar Bush", partly sung in Afrikaans. She appeared in the Royal Variety Performance and toured widely with comedian Derek Roy, before getting her own radio show in 1954.
Her major chart hit came with "Pickin' a Chicken", a South African tune with new words, which rose to No 9 on the UK Singles Chart at the start of 1956. Her first LP, Sugar and Spice, on which she sang 10 songs in nine different languages, followed later in the year. A continuous programme of radio work and tours followed, leading to more than one mental breakdown.
She faded from public view as public tastes for pop music changed through the late 1950s and 1960s, eventually returning to live in South Africa.

What I love about these classic versions is: You can SING ALONG! Too many modern artists feel compelled to put their unique "spin" on these songs, with weird phrasing, additional notes/glissandos, pregnant pauses, inhumanely-extended long notes, etc. Makes it impossible to follow along. I've enjoyed the past hour or so reading other webpages whilst merrily singing away! 🎼🎶 Happy holidays to all! ⛄🎄🎁

I love all it stands for, Christ's birth, giving to other's, getting together with family and friends and making Christmas cookies, sharing and caring and everything that goes with Christmas. We are from a family of 11! 8 boys, 3 girls! My mom and dad had over 75 grandkids when the passed away. Big families are the best! Hou are right...may not of had mu h,but Thank the Lord we had each other and wonderful loving parents. What else did we meed? We had curfews, respect for elders and one another, front row seats at church n Sunday School, and a farm cut Christmas tree!! My mom wouldake Christmas wreaths and sell them for xtra Christmas money from cedar n pine branches my brother's cut for her. Sold them for $8.50 each ,going door to door. My brother's did the selling. Of course thwy wore their Sunday best!! Treasired memories 😊😊❤❤

I'm 56 and I'm bawling my eyes out as I relive my childhood with my parents (passed) and siblings. Such beautiful memories. Don't recall ever fighting with my brother at Christmas... or hating my stupid sisters. Glad to know we weren't the only kids who grew up with Ferrante and Teicher.Christmas was telling Santa what I wanted and knowing that presents over $8 weren't going to make it under the tree. Knowing that Santa actually brought me gifts I never knew I wanted and loving them all because I trusted him. Hopes he makes it down the chimney again this year!

@Sweetie Hey thanks for that. And yes, I think I agree that this is going to actually be the start of the Grand Solar Minimum. I think that it is showing all the signs of being that, the temperatures are significantly colder each year, in fact five years ago it was a .03 degree difference, now I see that for the past two years it has increased to a whopping 1% which is massive! I just hope this person actually engages in the rationalizing of all this and actually engages in conversation, often times people who still hold desperately to this notion of doom and gloom and global warming are not able to even give you their attention, so we will see with this person. I have my hopes, we will see!

@Skip Snap You should listen to them, they are actually taking the time to explain things to you, in the hopes that you will consider the facts, and not just lash out at a contrary standpoint. And incidentally, all the things they just said about the climate is completely accurate. I studied this stuff and I know what statistics and studies they are referring to. It is exciting that this year, I think it will start next month in February, that the solar minimum will commence, and we shall have colder temperatures, some call it the mini ice age, which hasn`t been around for two hundred years. But I think I agree with the idea that, although solar minimums are a part of the Sun's natural life cycle every 11 years, this year is particularly going to be colder considering this year signals the start of the Grand Solar Minimum! This is where the energy which is being emitted is even more than usual. This event happens every 400 years! It`s a really exciting thing!

It means that the Earth shall experience colder temperatures, and much harsher winters for the next thirty years. There is such a thing as climate change, the climate is constantly changing, that is natural, it has nothing to do with us! The Climate change is not a global warming, it is a global cooling. A solar minimum is a period where the Sun releases lower energy or heat than usual. According to a report by NASA, the "Sun will reach its lowest activity in over 200 years in 2020." Isn`t that exciting mate?! We get to see this. And it hasn`t happened since Charles Dickens time! I am thrilled, more skiing trip and sleigh rides!

@윤소연 Actually, no, they don't. Singers today tend to trade in phrasing and tone for overblown vocal gymnastics - faux gospel - of which they don't have the chops. A good singer gets inside the melody; has respect for it. That's what Ms. Simmons is referring to. Oh, and the singers in this collection didn't require auto tune pitch correction either.

Many of these songs take me back to the late 1950's and our big excitement was to shop in Kresge's and Woolworth's for presents we could afford for our parents and siblings. I loved hearing these songs over the P.A. system. Really put us in the Christmas spirit. They still do.

I grew up in the 1950's and my parents played these songs on our record player. I loved hearing Spike Jones' s song "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth". We used to listen to his records and watch his tv show. It was wonderful watching the Perry Como show, the Dean Martin show, the Andy Williams show, the Nat King Cole show and the Bing Crosby show. It would be so nice if any of current popular singers that can sing as sweetly and clearly as the older singers could their own tv shows. I'm 58 and I grew up listening to these songs. It makes feel nostalgic, longing for the old days. After losing my parents I feel closer to them listening to these songs, but it makes me miss them all the more. Makes me want to cry

My grandparents introduced me to the music from the 30s and 40s (*back in the 80s) when I used to spend a month with them in the summer in Brooklyn NY - thank you grandma and grandpa - RIP - you were the best damn loving couple and I'm so glad I have the same relationship with my husband that you two had! love you!

It never ceases to amaze me that the most classic Christmas songs (and for the that matter, most classic Western songs like Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Ghost Riders in the Sky) came from one of the most desperate periods in American history, the 1930s and 1940s. Knowing what our parents/grandparents went through in the Great Depression-WWII era gives me hope that things aren't really that bad today.
