Evelyn King was born on July 1, 1960, in New York, New York, and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is one of eight children. Her uncle Avon Long had played the part of Sportin' Life in the first Broadway revival of Porgy and Bess and worked with Lena Horne at the Cotton Club. Her father sang back-up for groups at Harlem's Apollo Theater. Her mother managed a group called Quality Red.
King was discovered as a young woman while working with her mother at Philadelphia International Records as an office cleaner. Producer Theodore T. Life overheard her singing in a washroom and began coaching her. She was eventually signed to a production deal with Life's Galaxy Productions and a recording contract with RCA Records.[5]
In 1990, King married smooth jazz guitarist Freddie Fox. In 1997, she lost three family members to various illnesses. In 1987 her daughter Johnniea was born with brain damage and other health problems, dying two years later.[6]

I Don't Know If It's Right

If I should let you love me tonight
Before I let you kiss me, I got to get the situation in hand
'Cause I don't want you just to be another man, whoa, whoa, whoa
I don't know if it's right
To let you make love to me tonight
I don't know if I should
People tell me that you really know the right things to say
Especially when you're tryin' to get your way
Gotta be careful, gotta be smart, gotta watch out for my heart
I don't want it to be broken right from the start, oh, oh, oh, oh
I don't know if it's right
To let you make love to me tonight
I don't know if I should
Give my love to you when I know you're no good
I don't know if it's right
To let you make love to me tonight
I don't know if I should
Give my love to you when I know you're no good
I don't know if I should
Give it to you when I know you're no good
If it's right
I just don't know, no, hey hey
The lyrics to "I Don't Know If It's Right" suggest a sense of caution and uncertainty for the singer when it comes to her relationship with her partner. The opening line, "I've got to make sure it's all right," highlights the importance of her ensuring that the emotional and physical connection with her partner is fully consensual and respectful. She acknowledges that there is potential for love and physical intimacy with her partner, but needs to assess the situation carefully to ensure that she is not being taken for granted or used.
Throughout the song, the singer expresses a sense of anxiety and conflict between her desires for love and intimacy, and the fear of being hurt or manipulated by her partner. The third stanza highlights this as she becomes more aware of the potential deceit in her partner's actions, "People tell me that you really know the right things to say, especially when you're tryin' to get your way. Gotta be careful, gotta be smart, gotta watch out for my heart." Ultimately, she is left unsure of whether to pursue the physical relationship, knowing that her partner is "no good."
This song highlights the importance of consent and aligning desires and emotions in a relationship. It demonstrates the singer's sense of empowerment in establishing her needs in a relationship and making sure that it is mutually beneficial.

I was in the 5th grade when this came out, my friend Michelle Rodriguez and I would sing this every damn day...teachers would look at us like "Where in the hell did these kids pick this song up from". When I got older and understood the lyrics I was dying...my young ass had no business singing this but the song is just great.
