After a solo tour in the fall of 2003, Alexakis decided to continue with Everclear, organizing a new band that made its debut in March of 2004. The new lineup consisted of bass player Sam Hudson, guitarist Dave French, and drummer Eric Bretl. In the summer of 2004, the band added keyboard player Josh Crawley, and swapped Bretl for former Everclear drum tech Brett Snyder. The new lineup released its first recording, a cover of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land, that summer. A self-released EP of performances recorded for XM Satellite Radio called Closure was given out at shows in the fall of 2004.
Free of a major label, Alexakis spent the ensuing year and half slowly recording material for a new Everclear release. He admitted that the time after the breakup of the original lineup served as a "wake up call", during which he suffered his third divorce and a filing for bankruptcy. Alexakis announced the completion of the album in early 2006,titled Welcome To The Drama Club. The new band is now on Eleven Seven Music.
In August of 2008, drummer Brett Snyder left the band after four years. He was then replaced by Tommy Stewart, who previously played in bands Fuel and Godsmack.
Connection
Everclear Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Connection, I just can't make no connection
But all I want to do is to get back to you
Everything is going in the wrong direction
The doctor wants to give me more injections
Giving me shots for a thousand rare infections
And I don't know if he'll let me go
Connection, I just can't make no connection
My bags they get a very close inspection
I wonder why it is that they suspect 'em
They're dying to add me to their collection
I don't know if they'll let me go
Connection, I just can't mqke no connection
But all I want to do is to get back to you
The Everclear song Connection seems to describe a person who is out of touch with the world and is struggling to find a way back to their loved one. The lyrics are full of references to things like injections, rare infections, and bags being inspected, which suggest that the singer might be trapped in some kind of medical or institutionalized situation. They feel helpless and frustrated because they can't seem to make a "connection".
The repeated phrase "all I want to do is get back to you" creates a sense of urgency and longing. It seems that the singer's only hope is to reconnect with their loved one, who represents a kind of anchor or home base in a confusing and hostile world. The song conjures up feelings of isolation and vulnerability, but also suggests the possibility of redemption and salvation through love.
