Drunk Again
Everclear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Kathy please just go away
Don't let Hazel see you when you're high
Just take a walk to your sleazy bar
Come back after I've come down

Cross the street
On your knees
Makes me ashamed
It's hard to sleep
I can't shake your pain
You get high, you'd just throw it away

Hey Kathy please give me a break
I told you not to come here when you're drunk again
I'm sober now just 30 days
All alone and working hard to stay that way

Cross the street
On your knees
Makes it hard
It's hard to see
I can't shake your pain

You get high, you'd just throw it away
Kathy please, yeah yeah
I don't want to see you when you're down

Just leave me be and go away

You're not going to pull me down
I won't let you throw it away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Drunk Again" by Everclear depicts the aftermath of a toxic relationship where the singer is trying to keep himself sober and away from his ex-girlfriend Kathy who keeps coming back to him, seeking comfort and support while high. The song starts with the singer pleading with Kathy to leave him alone and not let "Hazel," presumably his new girlfriend, see her in that state. He asks her to walk to her "sleazy bar" and come back after he has come down. The chorus talks about how seeing her in that state makes the singer feel ashamed and how he can't shake off her pain even though he has moved on from her.

The second verse reveals that it's been 30 days since the singer has been sober, and he is trying his best to stay that way. He asks Kathy to not come to him when she is drunk again, and he won't let her pull him down. The chorus remains the same, with the singer feeling helpless and unable to shake off her addiction and pain.

The lyrics of "Drunk Again" unravel how addiction not only affects the addict but also the people around them. It highlights the pain and helplessness one feels when someone they care about is suffering from addiction. The song's slow and somber tune aids in conveying the emotions of the singer, and the bittersweet ending leaves the listeners with a mix of pity and relief.

Thank you soo much. I bought this ep at the show in Vancouver when they opened for Flop in 93 weeks after recording it. It was stolen along with my truck a few years later when i was also in Vancouver and Everclear headlined a sold out show. I was back stage talking with Art and co, When we finally got out my truck with all music inside was gone. Needless too say I have been looking for it for a very long time.. WOW well played Sir . This sound is the reason i loved and still do listen to Everclear. Thanks again Nervous and Weird forever.
