After a solo tour in the fall of 2003, Alexakis decided to continue with Everclear, organizing a new band that made its debut in March of 2004. The new lineup consisted of bass player Sam Hudson, guitarist Dave French, and drummer Eric Bretl. In the summer of 2004, the band added keyboard player Josh Crawley, and swapped Bretl for former Everclear drum tech Brett Snyder. The new lineup released its first recording, a cover of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land, that summer. A self-released EP of performances recorded for XM Satellite Radio called Closure was given out at shows in the fall of 2004.
Free of a major label, Alexakis spent the ensuing year and half slowly recording material for a new Everclear release. He admitted that the time after the breakup of the original lineup served as a "wake up call", during which he suffered his third divorce and a filing for bankruptcy. Alexakis announced the completion of the album in early 2006,titled Welcome To The Drama Club. The new band is now on Eleven Seven Music.
In August of 2008, drummer Brett Snyder left the band after four years. He was then replaced by Tommy Stewart, who previously played in bands Fuel and Godsmack.
Electra Made Me Blind
Everclear Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I turn and follow the western wind down
I go and pack up my shiny things
And go yeah just go
I'll find a new life in old L.A.
Yeah stupid happy with everything
I pulled myself down so easily
I met Electra when living down
Saw her spinning around and around
I never knew much about her past
I knew enough that I didn't ask
living isn't a simple thing
I know
No one ever said it's supposed to be
I know
July she lied
Living isn't a simple thing for me
I know ways to make it easier
In the song "Electra Made Me Blind," the singer expresses a sense of restlessness and a desire to leave their small town behind. They shake off the dust and follow the western wind towards a new life in Los Angeles, hoping to find happiness and fulfillment there. The singer acknowledges that life is not supposed to be easy, but they are determined to make it work.
The song takes a turn when the singer meets a girl named Electra in Los Angeles. Although they don't know much about her past, they are drawn to her and continue seeing her. However, the line "July she lied" suggests that their relationship may not have been entirely honest or genuine. Ultimately, the singer acknowledges that living is not simple, but they have learned ways to make it easier for themselves.
In terms of the song's meaning, "Electra Made Me Blind" can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Some people may see it as a commentary on the allure and danger of fast-paced city life, while others may view it as a reflection on the challenges and complexities of relationships. The song's lyrics are open-ended enough to allow for personal interpretation and reflection.
