I Will Buy You A New Life
Everclear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here is the money that I owe you
Yes you can pay the bills
I will give you more
When I get paid again

I hate those people who love to tell you
Money is the root of all that kills
They have never been poor
They have never had the joy of a welfare christmas

I know we will never look back

You say you wake up crying
Yes and you don't know why
You get up and you go lay down
Inside my baby's room

Yeah, I guess I'm doing OK
I moved in with the strangest guy
Can you believe he actually thinks
That I am really alive

I will buy you a garden
Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life
Yes I will

Yes, I know all about that other guy
The handsome man with athletic thighs
I know about all the time before
With that obsessive little rich boy

They might make you think you're happy
Yeah maybe for a minute or two
They can't make you laugh
No they can't make you feel the way that I do

I will buy you a garden
Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I know we can never look back

Will you please let me stay the night
Will you please let me stay the night
No one will ever know

I will buy you a garden
Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a garden
Where your flowers can bloom
I will buy you a new car
Perfect shiny and new
I will buy you that big house
Way up in the west hills
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

I will buy you a new life
I will buy you a new life

Overall Meaning

In Everclear's song I Will Buy You A New Life, the singer is addressing his or her partner and offering to pay off their debts and help them start anew. The lines "Here is the money that I owe you/Yes you can pay the bills/I will give you more/When I get paid again" reaffirm this commitment, with the singer promising to continue supporting their partner financially. However, the song also comments on the societal value placed on money and the notion that it is the root of all evil. While the singer acknowledges the struggles that come with being poor, they express frustration with people who have not experienced poverty and still judge it harshly.

The chorus repeats the promises of financial security and comfort that the singer intends to provide for their partner. The lines "I will buy you a garden/Where your flowers can bloom/I will buy you a new car/Perfect shiny and new/I will buy you that big house/Way up in the west hills/I will buy you a new life" emphasize the enormity of the singer's commitment and the drastic changes they are willing to make in order to improve the quality of their partner's life.

The song concludes with the singer asking to spend the night with their partner, possibly indicating a desire to rebuild their romantic relationship as well. Overall, I Will Buy You A New Life is a love song that seeks to redefine and challenge societal notions of happiness and success.

This song reminds me of my daughter/best friend. I am so proud of my angel. She is 25 and she loves me so much! She is going to be a welder soon. She is really good at it because she is an artist. Her painting will be famous but not until she goes to heaven like van go. She would e mad if she saw my Grammer errors.

This song reminds me of my angel because I honestly believe she will buy me a new life. My daughter is going to save us! I love her so much! If you knew what happened to our family and what we endured you would understand.

We once had it all
We lost a lot
My angels and I stayed together
We made it.
Thank you Alyssa❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

This song always makes me cry. I remember being 4 years old, in a uhaul with my mom and brother, driving to our new home that my mom bought after my father died. She had won a malpractice lawsuit against the doctor that had poisoned him. His death had literally bought us a new home in the suburbs. I remember driving down the road and my mom and bro singing this song and they were crying.... I didn't understand the tears. 22 years later, I do. RIP dad, thank you for our new life.

Man that's sad 😔

@jimmiller7386

As a father and son, I'm sure that he was happy that through his passing it gave you, your brother, and your mom something nice, and safe.

@pali1H

I'm not crying, you're crying

@ArainaNespiak

It is so funny how money drives so much in this world , yet can actually mean so little compared to what really matters.

@banzairunner7860

Man that’s sad 😞 how did the doctor poison him?
