For most of its existence, Everclear consisted of Art Alexakis (b. 12 April 1962, Los Angeles, California, USA; vocals, guitar), Craig Montoya (b. 14 September 1970; bass, vocals) and Greg Eklund (b. 18 April 1970; drums). Eklund replaced original drummer Scott Cuthbert in 1994. Montoya and Eklund departed the band in 2003, but Alexakis has continued performing as Everclear with a new lineup.

After a solo tour in the fall of 2003, Alexakis decided to continue with Everclear, organizing a new band that made its debut in March of 2004. The new lineup consisted of bass player Sam Hudson, guitarist Dave French, and drummer Eric Bretl. In the summer of 2004, the band added keyboard player Josh Crawley, and swapped Bretl for former Everclear drum tech Brett Snyder. The new lineup released its first recording, a cover of Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land, that summer. A self-released EP of performances recorded for XM Satellite Radio called Closure was given out at shows in the fall of 2004.

Free of a major label, Alexakis spent the ensuing year and half slowly recording material for a new Everclear release. He admitted that the time after the breakup of the original lineup served as a "wake up call", during which he suffered his third divorce and a filing for bankruptcy. Alexakis announced the completion of the album in early 2006,titled Welcome To The Drama Club. The new band is now on Eleven Seven Music.

In August of 2008, drummer Brett Snyder left the band after four years. He was then replaced by Tommy Stewart, who previously played in bands Fuel and Godsmack.

This song always makes me cry. I remember being 4 years old, in a uhaul with my mom and brother, driving to our new home that my mom bought after my father died. She had won a malpractice lawsuit against the doctor that had poisoned him. His death had literally bought us a new home in the suburbs. i've listened to this song a hundred bazillion times...as far as i'm concerned, it has to be "really alive." if it's not--tho, i think it is--i still can't change it in my head and heart. "can you believe he actually thinks i am really a lie" doesn't make much sense to me. but that's the beauty of music and all art: sometimes we make our own meaning. to me this song isn't about empty promises, it's about desperation and heartbreak, and the feeling that one will do anything to get the love of your life back. i think when alexakis promise "a new house" he's being figurative: "i'll do anything for you, just please come back."

I was reading about the lead singer, he's a really big sweetheart. He grew up poor and lived in a black neighborhood being the white kid. He saw what it was like to be poor and the struggles everyone had. So it influenced his personality and views hugely. ♡ His brother died from a heroin overdose, and his girlfriend committed suicide the same year. This song reminds me of my sad childhood, when my father took a hike - I adored him. I will never experience pain like that again in my life. And a shitty, cheating husband who promised this same thing to me, which didn't last, except for the two beautiful children I got out of it. This song encompasses that perfectly.

Literally Denise Richards most beautiful role as an actress-- she seemed to pull something genuine and pure forward in her acting for this scenario. And yes, this song is one a lot of young women dreamed they would hear in one form or another from a loved one. An acknowledgement that we stood by you during the bad times, will you take us with you for the good times or "trade up?" So many beautifully, sad, profound, (and maybe a little toxic) memories connected to this song and video.

They have never been poor. They have never felt the joy of a Welfare Christmas. Brings back a lot of memories of life after my dad left mom back in 1970. Obviously, the singer is scarred by a really impoverished childhood. That line resonates with me. It creates a "survival drive" that affects every facet of your life in good ways and in bad ways.

Art Alexakis, the lead singer, had a bad childhood. When he was 12, his brother committed suicide, when he was 13 his GF at the time committed suicide. When art was 14, he himself tried committing suicide. When art was a small child, his father left his mom leaving them poor. Sounds pretty awful to me.

I grew up poor, divorced parents, Dad was a starving artist, but still present. I supported my first husband alot, he always referenced this song and said he would eventually make it up to me, but he got addicted to drugs, and after me paying for rehab twice, he still relapsed. Fast foward to now, my second husband and love of my life, has fulfilled all those empty promises. He helped me go back to school, bought me a brand new car (even tho I was fine driving my dirty ol' jeep) and we travel the world, have homes in 3 countries.... this song melts my heart.

I remember this song. Means so much differently now that I have a husband and a kid. Money isn't stable lately which is one of the things we fight about. He tries to hide the things that make me worry, which makes me more worry when I find out. But I know he's doing his best to make us happy and I tend to forget how I to appreciate the little things he does for me and the hardest things he does that I don't know about. He's not perfect but I know he'll do anything for us.

They might make you think your happy, maybe for a minute or two, they can never make you happy the way that I do. My thoughts went to those words when my wife of 20 yrs Left me and took my kid for the guy she cheated on me with. ( Who has 5 kids with different mom's and was still living with his moma )! Those words cut me deep as well as this song to this day. To bad there some relationships that can't be fixed nor can the hart's and trust that have been broken.

@Hi Nevermind pretty much the entirety of So Much For The Afterglow. Sparkle And Fade has some great songs and preceded Afterglow album. Brown eyed girl. Heroin girl. Am radio. Amphetamine. Personal faves would be a tie between One Hit wonder, and Everything To Everyone. California Kings. RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF BANGERS OVER THE YEARS.

When I hear this song and watch this.. I can feel his deep pain of sadness and anger .. and the reality of his life as a child. I hope that he is healing.. that he can find peace.. and feel love and joy.. releasing this energy can help him ..and other's. This song just made me break down. Its like i wrote the lyrics. Everything pertains to my life pretty much. Been broken up with my fiancee of 3 years for 5 months now was a wreck from her still leading me on. Told her off a month ago, been feeling numb then listened to this and other everclear songs n havent stopped crying since.
