Watch the World Die
Everclear Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i am still living with your ghost
lonely and dreaming of the west coast
i dont want to be your down time
i dont want to be your stupid game
with my big black boots and an old suitcase
i do belive ill find myself a new place
i dont want to be tha bad guy
i dont want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
i just want to see some palm trees
i will try to shake away this disease

we can live beside the ocean
linger far behind
swim out past the breaker
watch the world die x2

i am still dreaming of your face
hungry and hollow from the pain you took away
i dont want to be your good time
i dont want to be your fallback crutch anymore
walk right up you brand new day
your same horizon in my own wearedway
i dont want to be tha bad guy
i dont want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
i just want to feel some downside
i just want to find some place to be alone

we can live beside the ocean
linger far behind
swim out past the breaker
watch the world die x4

oh!
yeah, watch the world die
yeah, yeah watch the world die

wooah, yeah, watch the world die
yeah watch the world die

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Everclear's song Watch the World Die portray a person who is haunted and stuck in the past as they are still living with their ghost, symbolizing the memories of their past relationship that they cannot shake off. They dream of the west coast, a place where they believe they can forget and move on. The person is tired of being used as a source of comfort and entertainment by their partner, someone who only uses them during their down time, playing stupid games and sleepwalking through life. The person wants to be free from this toxic cycle and start afresh, finding a new place where they can be alone and heal from the pain they've been carrying.

In the second verse, the person continues to dream about their former partner and is left feeling empty inside due to the pain that person caused them. They no longer want to be someone's temporary source of happiness or their fallback crutch, as they strive for a brighter future. The person is ready to face a brand new day without their former partner, but hopes to find some place to feel alive again. The chorus continues to bring up the idea of escaping to the ocean, swimming out past the breaker, and watching the world die. This suggests that the person wants to leave their problems behind and start again somewhere beautiful.

Overall, Watch the World Die describes the feeling of being stuck in a situation or with a person, unable to escape and move on, and the desire for freedom and healing. It is a song that resonates with anyone who has gone through a painful relationship and is trying to find their way back to themselves.

One of the most criminally underrated bands of the past 30 years. Just brilliant songwriting.

true, people have been jailed for failing to rate this song high enough

@taylorhession1905

Definitely underrated in their prime meaning their first album World of Noise to their 3rd album So Much For the Afterglow. Their 4th and 5th albums were good but you could definitely tell they were taking a different approach and then it really went downhill with slow motion day dream which was the last album for the drummer and bass player im pretty sure they were not feeling the direction the band was taking as well.

28 years after its release the song still strikes the nostalgia cord in your brain like it just came out. Another of the 90s music gems that do not receive the recognition.
