What It's Like
Everlast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fucking slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "Don't worry about a thing, baby doll, I'm the man you've been dreaming of"
Three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "Goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like

I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie (uh)
I've seen the good side of bad
And the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup and smoked the finest green
Stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start

(I knew) this kid named Max
Who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late
He liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night, there was a big gunfight and Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way, at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
To have to lose

Overall Meaning

Everlast’s song “What It’s Like” details the lives of people living in difficult circumstances and reminds the listener that it’s impossible to understand their struggles without experiencing them. The first verse recounts an encounter between a man begging for spare change and a passerby who dismisses him with cruelty. The chorus repeats the refrain “then you really might know what it’s like” to emphasize the point that it’s impossible to fully comprehend the hardships of others without experiencing them firsthand. The second verse tells the story of a woman named Mary who becomes pregnant by a man who abandons her, leaving her to deal with the consequences of her situation. The final verse shares a tragic tale of a man named Max who worked as a drug dealer and was killed in a gunfight, leaving behind a family to grieve his loss.

At its core, the song is a call for empathy and understanding. It urges listeners to recognize that everyone has a story and that it’s impossible to judge people without fully understanding the situations they face. Many of the characters referenced in the song are marginalized by society, including the homeless man and Mary who faces stigma for her decision to have an abortion. By highlighting their stories, the song raises awareness of the ways in which societal factors can contribute to the difficult circumstances faced by individuals.

Aside from its powerful message, “What It’s Like” also boasts a unique sound, blending rock, hip-hop, and folk influences. Its distinctive style helped the song stand out from other hits of its era and has ensured its continued popularity for decades. In addition to its musical merits, the song has also been used in a variety of cultural contexts, from being referenced in TV shows and movies to being played at political rallies.

slept on a piece of cardboard in a vacant field every night spent half the day or more (flying a sign) to get enough money for a nik of weed and a 4 pack of naty ice
spent the rest of the day getting wasted just to ease the pain
spent 4 years doin that
had enough started to reach out to get help
spent another 4yrs finding out how fu@ked up and dysfunctional the homeless support system is

got pre approved for a home loan today
around july of next year I be moving out of my shitty overpriced Apt in da hood

This song came out when I was 19. I am now 43 and have lived every word of this song. Don't ever judge someone, you have no idea the burdens they are carrying. Be kind. To others and to yourself.

@HipHopCantSaveMe

I just posted almost the same thing.
We were young and dumb 25 years ago.
Now we are grown up and this song hits too close to home.

Many died from drug addictions, suicide, etc.
