What its Like
Everlast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We've all seen a man at the liquor store beggin' for your change
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fucking slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like

Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "Don't worry about a thing, baby doll, I'm the man you've been dreaming of"
Three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "Goddamn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like

I've seen a rich man beg
I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win
And a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie (uh)
I've seen the good side of bad
And the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon
Drank from the golden cup and smoked the finest green
Stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start

(I knew) this kid named Max
Who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late
He liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night, there was a big gunfight and Max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way, at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)

Then you really might know what it's like (what it's like)
To have to lose

Overall Meaning

Everlast's song "What it's Like" is a powerful commentary on the experiences of people on the fringes of society. The song starts with a scene of a man begging for change outside a liquor store. His hair is dirty, he's wearing dirty clothes, and he has a look of shame in his eyes. When he asks a man for spare change, the man responds by telling him to get a job.

The song then shifts to Mary, who got pregnant from a man named Tom who she thought loved her. When Tom cut off all contact with her, she decided to get an abortion. But when she went to the clinic, she was met with hostility and judgment. The song paints a picture of how difficult it is to be in her shoes and have to make such a difficult decision.

The song goes on to describe other experiences of life on the margins, from a rich man begging to a sad man smiling. The final story is about a man named Max who used to deal drugs on the corner. One night, he got into a gunfight and was killed. His wife and kids are left to deal with the pain of losing him.

Overall, "What it's Like" is a powerful song about empathy and understanding for those who are struggling. It's a call to recognize that we're all human and we all have struggles, even if they're not always visible on the surface.

had enough started to reach out to get help
spent another 4yrs finding out how fu@ked up and dysfunctional the homeless support system is

got pre approved for a home loan today

This song came out when I was 19. I am now 43 and have lived every word of this song. Don't ever judge someone, you have no idea the burdens they are carrying. Be kind. To others and to yourself.

@HipHopCantSaveMe

I just posted almost the same thing.
We were young and dumb 25 years ago.
Now we are grown up and this song hits too close to home.

Many died from drug addictions, suicide, etc.

It's a crazy world 🌏
