Who I really am but you'll never know me
Everyday it's as if I play a part
Now I see if I wear a mask
I can fool the world
But I cannot fool my heart
Staring straight back at me?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
I am now in a world where
I have to hide my heart
And what I believe in
But somehow I will show the world
What's inside my heart
And be loved for who I am
Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?
Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
And there's a heart that must be
Free to fly
That burns with a need to know
The reason why
Why must we all conceal
What we think and how we feel?
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?
I won't pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time
When will my reflection show
Who I am inside?
Who I am inside?
Who I am inside?
When will my reflection show
Who I am, who I am inside?
Who I am, oh, oh, who I am?
The lyrics to Everlife's "Reflection" are a powerful and poignant commentary on the struggles of finding one's true identity in a world that often forces us to wear masks and hide our true selves. The opening lines set a somber tone, as the singer laments that despite people's perceptions of her, no one truly knows the real her. Her daily routine and interactions feel like an act, as she struggles to reconcile her true self with the person she presents to the world.
The chorus of the song takes a more hopeful turn, as the singer longs to reveal her true self to the world. She questions why her reflection doesn't show the person she truly is, and expresses her need to be loved for who she really is. The song then goes on to explore the idea of a "secret me" that we're forced to hide, and asks why we can't simply be ourselves.
Overall, "Reflection" is a moving and relatable song that speaks to anyone who has ever felt like they need to hide their true selves. It encourages listeners to embrace their true identity, and to believe that they will be loved and accepted for who they are.
