Come on Down
Every Mothers Son Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She sits on the dock
A fishin' in the water uh, huh
I don't know her name
She's the fisherman's daughter uh, huh

Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down where we can play
Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down we'll sail away

She smiled so nice
Like she wants to come with me uh, huh
But she's tied to the dock
And she can't get free

Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down where we can play
Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down we'll sail away

Fish all day sleep all night
Father never lets her out of his sight
Soon I'm gonna have to get my knife
And cut that rope, cut that rope

So we can go fishin' in my little red boat
Make you happy in my little red boat, so

Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down where we can play
Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down we'll sail away

Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down where we can play

Come on down to my boat baby
Come on down we'll sail away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Come On Down" by Every Mothers Son tell the story of a young woman who sits fishing on a dock. The singer of the song is intrigued by her and wishes for her to join him on his boat, sailing away into the unknown. However, the fisherman's daughter is tethered to the dock, unable to leave her father's sight. As the song progresses, the singer decides to take matters into his own hands and cut the rope keeping her docked, freeing her to join him on his boat.

One interpretation of the lyrics could be that they represent a desire for freedom and escape. The fisherman's daughter is trapped on the dock by her father's strict rules, a metaphor for the singer's own feelings of being trapped or restrained. By cutting the rope, the singer is symbolically breaking away from these constraints and encouraging the fisherman's daughter to do the same.

Alternatively, the lyrics could also be seen as a romantic pursuit. The singer is enamored with the fisherman's daughter and wants her to join him on his boat, where they can fish and spend time together. The "knife" referenced in the lyrics could be interpreted as a metaphor for the singer's determination and willingness to fight for their relationship.

Overall, "Come On Down" is a catchy and upbeat song with a narrative that captures themes of freedom, escape, and romance.

I wish it was 1967 forever!

1967 was a great year for music. But for the 17 year old boy I was Vietnam and the draft were staring me in the face. I knew friends who were drafted and died there. I attended some of their funerals. Later I spent over a year there and was almost killed numerous times. At 71 I'm a 100% service connected disabled Army Infanty Veteran. War really is hell.

It really was, I was just looking at a list of songs from this year, and it was amazing. This one seems to be a mostly forgotten gem

1967 was a magical year. It was called "the Summer of Love " and for those young at heart at the time songs such as these filled out what I consider the greatest period of American popular music 🎶 with lots of help from our Rock and Roll friends from Britain . They were so many debuts from great bands and performers that made that summer so legendary. The music still shines in the hearts of many who experienced it. Pure magic!
