Single
Everything But The Girl/Massive Attack Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I called you from the hotel phone
I haven't dialed this code before
I'm sleeping later and waking later
I'm eating less and thinking more
And how am I without you?
Am I more myself or less myself?
I feel younger, louder
Like I don't always connect
Like I don't ever connect

And do you like being single?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
And do I like being single?
Am I coming back?
Am I coming back?

I'll put my suitcase here for now
I'll turn the TV to the bed
But if no one calls and I don't speak all day
Do I disappear?
And look at me without you
I'm quite proud of myself
I feel reckless, clumsy
Like I'm making a mistake
A really big mistake

And do you like being single?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
And do I like being single?
Am I coming back?
Am I coming back?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?

And now I know
Each time I go
I don't really know
What I'm thinking
And now I know
Each time I go
I don't really know
What I'm thinking of

Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?

Do you want me back?
Do you want me back?

Overall Meaning

The verses in Everything But the Girl's "Single" describe the experience of being alone after a breakup. The singer is in a hotel room, away from home, and reflecting on their life without their partner. They are experiencing a shift in their behavior; they are sleeping later, eating less, and thinking more. These changes suggest that they are struggling to cope with their new reality. They question whether they are more or less themselves without their partner and express feeling disconnected from others.

The chorus reflects on the idea of being single versus being in a relationship. The singer asks if their ex-partner likes being single and if they want them back. They also question whether they like being single and if they will return to the relationship. The repetition of these questions highlights the uncertainty and doubt that the singer is experiencing.

The bridge of the song admits that the singer doesn't really know what they are thinking or feeling. This confusion and lack of clarity about the future suggests that the singer is struggling to come to terms with the end of the relationship.

Overall, "Single" is a poignant song that captures the complex emotions and struggles associated with a breakup.

Tracey has such a timeless voice. much like Sade

Camille Graham

Tracey not only wrote, but also poignantly sang the soundtrack to my life.

Camille Graham The contrast of the drum and bass and the haunting synth sound after 3:25 is absolute genius. That sad, melancholy tone that Ben was able to conjure up from that machine is like the most beautiful string section breaking your heart. London Grammar, Austra, Bat For Lashes... those are just some of the acts that are indebted to these two great artists.

+jamesdeansghost55 I couldn't agree more. If I could put the strings of my heart and the sorrow trapped within it to music, it would be as haunting as the sounds that Ben produced in this track. It's exactly why this song, and the entire Walking Wounded album resonates so much with me to this day. It sonically captures the very essence of feelings held deep within. "Daniel" by Bat for Lashes does sound very EBTG-esque. It's almost undeniable to see hear where the inspiration came from.
