Original release and remix

Prior to "Missing", Everything but the Girl was most known as a folk and jazz group. They had released eight albums prior to Amplified Heart and had a number-three UK singles chart hit in 1988 ("I Don't Want to Talk About It"), but were relatively unknown in the United States. "Missing" was recorded as a laid-back guitar-based pop song that had earned modest airplay on U.S. Adult Contemporary radio. The duo gave the track to house music producer Todd Terry to remix for clubs. The resulting dance version of "Missing" became a worldwide smash, matching Everything But the Girl's UK best chart position of number three in November 1995 and hitting number one on the German singles chart. The song became the duo's first U.S. Billboard Hot 100 entry, and after a long climb up the chart, it peaked at number two in 1996 (in its twenty-eighth chart week), eventually spending fifty-five weeks on the chart (a record at the time which has since been broken — the single is today the ninth-longest charting song on the U.S. Hot 100.).

Tracey Thorn later explained to Rolling Stone that "Missing" was originally intended as a dance-oriented track: [1]
“ "It was written with that idea in mind, totally... we put on sort of a laid back house groove instead. Then when we gave it to Todd, he took it in a really, really strong New York house direction, which had a real simplicity to it, but it was very infectious." ”

After the global success of "Missing", Everything but the Girl ventured into a more electronic/house/drum and bass direction with their follow-up albums Walking Wounded and Temperamental.

Even with its success in the mainstream and in dance clubs, "Missing" never entered the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. Everything but the Girl would eventually amass four U.S. dance chart number-ones, with singles released after "Missing". The track also served as the signature song for Saturday Night Live character Mango, played by Chris Kattan. During several of his fans' obsessive daydream sequences, Mango would commonly appear in a thought cloud over the person's head, and dance provocatively to this song.

Once had a gf/lover that would just up and disappear... then pop up 5 months later in another state. Drove me bonkers and I begged her to not do that again. But she did. The lesser-known original version, as heard in this video, did poorly on the charts for whatever reason. The original version only charted in the UK and it peaked at a measly 69. It's a shame more people aren't familiar with the original version, as it's a great track, in my opinion. I love the beat, acoustic guitar and keyboard sounds. I'll even go as far as to say I prefer the original version over the Todd Terry remix, but that's not to say that the remix is bad by any means. I love 1990s house/club music.

I worked at Sears when I was younger, and they would play this song over the store speakers sometimes. The rest of their playlist was terrible, as was the job, but discovering this song almost made working there worth it. I quit after a few months and moved on with my life—traveled, experienced the world, went through a heartbreak or two.

A decade later, as I approach thirty, this song has started popping back into my head. I think back to my eighteen-year-old self folding clothes at the store, this song playing from the scratchy speakers in the ceiling, and I realize there's no way I could have really understood what this song was about at the time. I'm only just now beginning to understand. It resonates more and more as time goes on, and lately has begun to give me goosebumps each time I hear it.

Thank you for sharing such a deep moment in your life. I'm in my 50's and trust me growing up in the 70's into the 90's music was at its best. Hearing this brought me back in time. I remember the first time I heard this. I did not lose a family member. I just broke up with my girl and this song really expressed how I felt. Losing my wife whom I knew since I was 15 and married to for almost 37 years was the absolute worst though. I cried daily for over a year. It's been almost two years now and it has settled down a little, but still cry every few days and I doubt that will ever go away... we had an excellent marriage. Not perfect, but we rarely argued (I don't recall arguments honestly), said "I love you" to each other at least three times a day... I wasn't a womanizer so I didn't really date women before her, so I am totally lost now and I HATE being single. When you're supposed to grow old together and suddenly she's taken away so fast... I don't know what to do to be honest. Feeling totally lost and alone. Only prayer has helped me.

It's funny. When I heard this song on the radio as a kid I made up lyrics because I didn't understand what Tracey was saying. I remember life being a lot brighter back then, everything so fresh.
I finally understand what this song means. A few years ago I ruined a sincere friendship with one of those people who would pay any price to save someone. All she wanted was an ear to do the same.
I tried to go to the house she grew up in so long ago. A place in my mind I never thought she would leave. She's gone now, no way to contact her and she doesn't speak to her family.
How ugly was I to treat someone I love in a manner such as that.

In 1993-4 I met an old lady in Lithuania who had lived near where I grew up in the 60s-70s. She had been born and raised till about age 11-12 there, and had been taken “back” by her parents to Lithuania, a country she did not know. This was the late 1930s. That part of Lithuania was closed to foreigners (to all except Russians and neighboring Latvians, and eventually to East Germans) and had radio & TV jamming masts. For 50 years the only time she heard English again was when in hospital for an op and the surgeon noticed her Book of Common Prayer (edition from around 1900, written in old fashioned English even then.). This was how she had kept up her memory of English, by reading this little book every night and morning. She asked me what the English words were for radiatorus, telivisorų and so on. She was so powerfully homesick for the little corner of the shire she remembered — about a mile from where my dad grew up.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her that it was now unrecognisable; the coal slag heaps gone, along with all the country roads and isolated miners hamlets, the fields and hedges of brambles and rosehips. Now it’s a suburb, a motorway; the banks of the stream routed behind a maze of huge metal-box-warehousing and container-trucking, and filled with old shopping trolleys. Where she lived now, in a small country town in Lithuania, with fields and small allotments where ordinary people had their veg gardens — it was much more like where she grew up.

As a teenager I had a bitter sweet relationship with this song, I only imagined a lovers perspective and was utterly against being "hooked" for someone who refused to love you back. Now I an older and this song is about grieving it can be about anyone you love and it's gone, a parent, a grandparent, heck even a beloved pet!
