Poison
Everything In Slow Motion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Falling deep into the sound.
One more hit should numb the pain, when I hit the ground.
I'd give anything to rest in your arms tonight.

Tear the needle from my skin.
Hide me somewhere safe before the drugs kick in.
I'd give anything to rest in your arms tonight.
How long will I live like I'm already dead.
I can feel my heartbeat slowing.
How much will it take before I'm seeing red.
This isn't who I am.
This isn't what I had planned.

Free me from myself.

How long will I live like I'm already dead.
I can feel my heartbeat slowing.
How much will it take before I'm seeing red.
I can't feel anything.
I'm begging you for a chance to start over.

There's a light within all of this darkness.

As the poison runs through my veins, Oh God.
I would give anything, just to rest in your arms

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Poison" by Everything In Slow Motion are about struggling with addiction and the desire for someone to rescue the singer before it's too late. The "sound" the singer is falling deep into could refer to the music itself or the addiction. The use of the phrase "one more hit should numb the pain" suggests that the singer is using drugs as a means of coping with emotional pain. The desire to rest in someone's arms implies that the singer is seeking comfort and safety, but the drugs are preventing them from finding it.

The second verse shows the singer recognizing the danger and wanting to escape it. They want someone to hide them somewhere safe before the drugs take effect. The line "How long will I live like I'm already dead" suggests that the singer is already so consumed by their addiction that they are no longer really living. The repetition of "I'd give anything to rest in your arms tonight" emphasizes the desperate need for someone to save them.

The bridge of the song is a plea for help. The singer wants to be freed from themselves, suggesting that they recognize that they need help to break free from the addiction. The lines about the heartbeat slowing and seeing red suggest that the addiction is taking a physical toll on the singer's body. They're begging for a chance to start over and find a way out of the darkness of addiction.

Overall, the song is a powerful representation of the struggles of addiction and the need for help in breaking free from it.

I struggled and overcame a serious heroin addiction 5 years ago, and I have heard many songs since that try and speak from an addicts perspective, but these guys nailed it. I just discovered them on spotify and I got goosebumps and broke down and teared up after hearing this song, brought me back to the darkness and sadness and brokenness I struggled with, then the cry out for rest... thankfully the loving one gave me rest and rescued me. This song is truth. god bless :)

This album showcases the mind of a true addict, doesn't necessarily have to be hard drugs (I know this song specifically talks about heroine/crack/meth), but being an alcoholic and drug abuser myself (pills/cocaine), all while claiming to be 'Christian' at the same time, I can most definitely relate to what Shane sings about throughout this entire album (especially this song and The Fool). This is what the "Christian" market/mainstream needs, REAL music, about REAL issues, from REAL artists that have fought the battles. A REAL display of what this world of sin truly offers, alongside the message of overcoming it only with the Lord's help and provision (ie. Jesus the Christ). This is why I love artists like EISM, Dustin Kensrue (Thrice and solo work), Mouth of the South, A Feast for Kings, and Beartooth (along with many, many others); they display what 'true' Christianity should look like. And please don't misinterpret that I may be downplaying what tons of other artists do; I know my opinion is strictly subjective to my own beliefs and tastes, I have only listed the bands and artists that have spoken the most to my own insignificant self.

we all sin..addiction can be drugs, alcohol, food, etc. Christians are sinners too...God loves us all, especially the broken ones...that's what I need to keep reminding myself.❤

Amen, Heidi, it's not about sinners claiming to be Christian and enslaved to sin. No, it's about sinners that would go to heaven if they died in their states, because they were saved. Save for The Fool, of course, that's about... well... a fool.

A song like this shows versatile songwriting and it's one of my favorites on the album!  Just try not to get it stuck in your head...!
