I think this scene is important for so many reasons but it was definitely what woke Serena up. Eden was the epitome of what she hoped Gilead women would be- pious, virtuous, obedient, traditional. When Eden does what a normal young girl would do (fall in love and want to run away with her boyfriend) she’s executed. Serena realizes there really is no hope for women in Gilead. Any real humanity or identity they express will be met with destruction or execution. It’s interesting the first time we see Eden is on her wedding day- a child bride to Nick, forced upon him and brainwashed into thinking it’s at all ethical. The last time you see her you see her she’s with the man she chooses to love, and again she’s bound but free.

It is so interesting that the writers chose this quote for Eden's last words. It dismantles completely the philosophy of Gilead. A lot of people says that this show is anti-christianity. I do not think it is. It shows the hypocrisy that some christians or even any religious groups can have. But mainly, it shows that those people are not interested in the "Truth" but in power. Religion is not the cause it is just the tool they use.

What is the most chilling about this scene, is that this exact scenario actually plays out till this day in some country's. Saudia Arabia for example still drowns women in their family pools for sexual relations deemed inappropriate. The thing about Handmaid's Tale that many people don't realize, is that all the punishments and restrictions are things that have had, or are currently happening to women in the world. The author of the book in which this show is based wanted to show how horrifying the world can be to women.

@Sue Meriah you've completely missed a lot of the Handmaid's Tale if you think it's simply a matter of being one religion or another, instead of about fascism and its co-opting of religion. That's what you see in Saudi Arabia, and that's what a lot of Christians in the US would love to bring about. The Rapture Ready forum used to be full of Christians who looked forward to a future theocracy where gays and anyone who defended them would be put to death. It might still be like that too. They made it very clear their only problem with Sharia law was which god it was in the name of.

Troll He did not say that. He said that there are some necessary measures that, while ugly, have to be put into place if the existence of humanity is at stake. Of course, Gilead is not at all a good way to do this. If we ever come to a point where we have to incentivize women into bearing more children, we are smart enough (at least I hope so) to know that putting them under constant social pressure and creating a system based on murder is not at all helpful if you want to rack up the baby count. That's what the show portrays; It shows that structures to increase the birth rate are necessary in a situation of high infertility (by showing how all the other "free" countries are slowly dying out and losing power by the day), but that Gilead is far too extreme in its ways and too repressive to really create stability - AND, that if all the other nations refuse to give up some personal liberties and do not implement their own birth quotas, Gilead will inevitably conquer the whole world since they are the only ones who produce a next generation.

Just look at the facts. As Mason stated, "uncontrolled relations with one another led to mass infertility"; But before Gilead, June appeared to have only ever been with one guy, Luke. In Gilead, she was with a whole lot of guys; Fred, Commander Lawrence, and Nick. Her body count quadrupled. So, in the end, Gilead made the situation they swore to work against much worse.

Troll I am not pro life actually. I am pro choice, because as long as it's possible, the right to self determination, especially physical, is one of the most powerful assets to stabilize our society, and one of the main reasons why western society is the best.

I got a question for you. When attacked in wartime, aren't all the men levied to fight in the war, where many of them will suffer and die? Why is it okay to force men to die for their country when needed, but not to implement birth quotas if we ever face an extinction crisis? In both cases, people have to offer their bodies to the society, in order to defend it. Why is one worse than the other?

Problem is; If we ever face a situation where we are threatened with extinction, systems like gilead WILL arise, and that's a fact. My guess is somewhere like China or the middle east, where the regimes are already oppresive enough to do something similar to Gilead. And these systems will have a huge population advantage over anyone who doesn't implement such systems, and after a few decades, we will have become so weak that the fundemantalists will completely destroy our society and take away all our liberties and freedoms. Do you want that?

I think that if we ever get such a situation, we have to implement some kind of way to increase the birth rate drastically, in a moderate way - otherwise, we will not be able to defend ourselves against those who take the most drastic measures. If we ever face such a crisis, we WILL have to sacrifice some liberties in order to defend the general freedom of our people against those who want to take it away. We wouldn't really have a choice.

Does anyone think there is any symbolic meaning the positioning of Eden and Isaac's bodies at 2:10? He falls below her and of course, it could be because of the chain, but it kind of looked like he fell into the position of a proposing (as in engagement) man. Since most marriages and Gilead seem to be arranged, proposing and choosing your partner wouldn't be a thing. This scene gives me chills. It is awful. She is so young. She could have a had a whole life, but instead this society has decided to kill her. Forcing people to watch as she slowly drowns next to somebody she cares for. This is such a damaging scene and it really woke up people like Serena to the harsh reality of what they live in. Serena always victimised herself (she had every right to feel oppressed, she was, however she did bring it upon herself), but this helped her realise what the America she created looked like for less fortunate women. Women getting taped, children being married off at such a young age, lesbians being killed, children being killed. It’s such a powerful message about society as we know it, and how we will soon destroy ourselves. We are going backwards in time already, and this Sven is the perfect highlight about how messed up society can be

I love that she was named Eden...the Garden of Eden is where Adam and Eve first sinned, and were tempted to do so...Eden in Handmaid’s tale diverts from the strict path Gilead has for her (by running away with Isaac), and she falls, just like Eve. Also what a juxtaposition: the Garden of Eden vs. Gilead. Couldn’t be more opposite. And Gilead killed Eden. This feels allegorical.

I remember seeing this clip but now having seen this episode, I came back here. Eden was a beautiful, wholesome child and yes, she was a child! Also Serena's expressions hit me so hard. I have found it so ironic that Serena was at the forefront of the Gilead movement and wrote a book but then she got no access in the higher authority for the movement AND reading got banned in Gilead. There's a phrase in Urdu that describes this situation 'اپنے پاؤ ں پہ کلہاڑی مارنا' which literally translates to 'To hit your foot with an axe' which just basically means Serena messed up things for other women as we already know BUT she also messed up things for herself but she didn't realize it then.

I find it interesting/metaphoric that in Offred giving knowledge of the old world (free love/choosing who we love) that she lost Eden All like the orginal story of Eden. Man and woman were made for one another yet through the woman gaining knowledge and teaching man were they casted out. Everyone crying for Eden is actually showing that they all love her because she is a pure angel. She has no feature to hate about. I don’t know how Eden got so much vitriol. She’s literally a child with very lofty goals of being a perfect little wife with a husband who would love her & not only was that not a reality but she also fell in love with someone else which was a crisis to her very foundation. Most adults wouldn’t be able to navigate those waters, I don’t understand how we could possibly expect a 15 year old to do so. Not blaming Nick at all bc I’m very glad he couldn’t feel love or arousal concerning her since that would have been wrong as well. That girl just deserved better in all respects.

So strong scene.... The love quote from Corinthians was always my favourite, but now it was given another dimension...
The scenes when someone starts to quote a part of the Bible which does not conform into Gilead propaganda are always amazing... Eden in this scene, June answering "and blessed are those who suffer forthe cause of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven"... It's only a pity that when they were asked to stone Janine, no one remembered John, the part stating that he who never sinned should throw the first stone... Though that scene was impressive on its own.

@Belinda Hart I think it was a small mistake that they tried to execute Janine in Series 1. If they had kept her alive (punishing her another way), then June's 'plot armour' wouldn't be an issue.

If you re-watch the pilot, you see Eden as a young girl (probably 10) in a pink dress.
Then 5 years later she’s considered an adult, placed with a man, and eventually drowned.
So sad but great storytelling.

When I first watched this I actually despised Eden for breaking up June and Nick. And seeming so willing to do so even through she knows Nick wasn't into it. But rewatching before season 4 I realised she's only doing what she's been taught and understood since young. Of cours she didn't deserve to die. Like her dad probably did way worse growing up. But isn't afraid to expose his daughters betrayal.

The horrible thing is, people believe those involved in affairs deserve to be humiliated, berated, beaten, and butchered. Gilead embraces that belief and enjoys enacting it. So when I hear about people wanting to take revenge on cheaters...I think of this scene...and all the other scenes in movies & tv along with times in our world where cheaters got their 'just desserts'. It's truly vile what some people do to those who want to be with who they want.

I remember hitting my breaking point a couple episodes before this. The sheer amount of misery got so high that it broke my immersion and I started laughing. What a show! The brilliant acting and cinematography almost got me through two whole seasons... and then I realized that the shock value was the actual point of the show. I haven't really watched this series nor do I know much about it...but honestly this scene literally brought me to tears no lie. And it was recommended in my suggestions and I don't know why. It's extremely emotional and I'm literally trying to shazam the music towards the end. It has really given me an emotional+anxiety attack that I didn't expect :(

I did not know based on what she wrote the book, but I was thinking the whole time that everything is similar to my experience in Iran so much that it did not feel like fiction to me at all :/ even this scene, fathers and brothers kill their daughter/sister if they endanger "family reputation". We are beaten, arrestet, called being sluts even for smallest things like having our hair out a bit from our vails. We are taught at school how real women are obedient, follow their husband and bring as many kids as possible to them. This might be story for most people, but to some of us from such countries, feels more like a documentary.

I was kinda surprised to see Serena crying so miserably. I thought whys she crying so badly ? Was she so attached to Eden ? Then it hit me that she's crying because that's what happens to women in Gilead and that could be her daughter someday. Sooner or later. She saw the future of Nicole in Eden.

Sinceramente falando não senti desprezo pela Eden. Ela só foi mais uma vítima do sistema que Gilead implantou. Se casou aos 15 anos com uma promessa através ensinamentos com um "lar feliz". Nick por sua vez outra vítima do sistema não ama ela e sim June. Eden se apaixona por alguém que mostra que a recíproca é verdadeira e ela gosta disso e tenta viver isso. E tão nova tem sua vida tirada com o pretexto de que ela se tornou pecadora, sendo que só foi mais uma dentre tantas vítimas de Gilead.😪😕
