I Die Again
Evig Natt Lyrics

(Music: Stein, Lyrics: Kirsten)

You are nothing, yet you are, everything to me
Cold winter nights, kill me slowly
I welcome every breath, it brings me
Closer to the end, to nothingness

Settling waters, that run deeper, and
deeper
I close my eyes and drown in my sleep

You breathe me, you leave me
I fade, I die again
This is what I deserve

Here in the dark, this is where I belong
Never afraid, but tired of feeling

Murmurs of a past, I'm listening
I can't help but hear your whispers

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I Die Again" by Evig Natt convey the idea of being consumed by nothingness and finding comfort in darkness. The first line "You are nothing, yet you are, everything to me" juxtaposes the idea of nothingness with everything. It is a statement of the paradoxical nature of love, where even though the person you love may mean nothing to the world, they are everything to you. The next lines "Cold winter nights, kill me slowly, I welcome every breath, it brings me, Closer to the end, to nothingness" speaks about the bleakness of winter nights, which are a metaphor for the darkness and hopelessness that the singer is engulfed with. Every breath that they take, brings them to the end, to the state of nothingness which they are welcoming.

The second stanza "Settling waters, that run deeper, and deeper, I close my eyes and drown in my sleep" again uses the metaphor of water, which symbolizes emotions. The deeper the water, the more intense the emotions. The singer is drowning in his sleep, not in a literal sense, but more metaphorically. This highlights the suffocating feeling of being in a state of despair. The next few lines, "You breathe me, you leave me, I fade, I die again, This is what I deserve", is about a toxic relationship where the lover is breathing the life out of the singer. The singer is left to fade away and die time and time again. They feel they deserve it, which portrays their helplessness to leave the abusive relationship.

The last stanza "Here in the dark, this is where I belong, Never afraid, but tired of feeling, Murmurs of a past, I'm listening, I can't help but hear your whispers" brings the song full circle, highlighting the need for darkness where the singer belongs. They are not afraid of it but are tired of the intense emotions they feel. The last line about hearing the whispers of the past throws light on the longing to go back to a time that seemed better, where love was pure and not toxic.
