Don't Cry For Me Argentina
Evita Cast Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You'll think it strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love
After all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
I had to let it happen
I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window
Staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions
They're not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don't cry for me Argentina
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of
To say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true
The lyrics of "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" by Evita Cast is a song of heartbreak, confusion, and remorse. The song is sung from the perspective of Eva Perón, who is addressing the people of Argentina. The opening lyrics indicate that what she has to say won't be easy for people to understand. She asks the people not to cry for her now that she has left as her love is still with them. Eva admits that it is strange that she has to explain her feelings, and even though she had made so many mistakes and done things wrong, she still needs the people of Argentina's love.
Eva Perón then goes on to discuss how she had to let her life take a turn and change direction; she could not live a life of poverty any longer, which is referred to as being down at the heel. She chose freedom and tried new things, but even though she experienced so much, nothing impressed her. She declares that fortune and fame were never important to her as they were only illusions and not real solutions. The answer was and always has been the love of people.
Finally, the song ends with Eva Perón confessing of not having spoken too much, but she hopes that people understand her ambiguous feelings and know that every word is true. She kept her promises and never left the people of Argentina truly.

@NotCrazyLimitedEdition
Evita was by far Madonna’s best vocal work. Never before or after did we see her sing like that.
@leah6488
I actually only watched the movie a few days ago, and I feel the same way. I feel like It was one of the best musicals I have ever seen.
@bryanismyname7583
She wanted to prove she could do something different and worked hard at that. Too bad she never found another project to sustain that level of artistry. But it's similar to Diana Ross, in that she did one great movie ("Lady Sings the Blues") and declined in terms of her movie roles after that.
@mulliganstew72
She blew her vocals for this role. Her passion is second to none.
