BLOW, BOYS, BLOW is a full and rousing selection from folk heroes Ewan McColl (whose resume included author, playwright, actor, street singer, and laborer) and A.L. Lloyd (who, among other things, sang as the "Shantyman" in the movie version of MOBY DICK). Sung to ease the back-breaking work and fill up the long and lonely nights with rowdy and profane entertainment, the songs are fierce, rough, sublime and full of longing

I've seen the lies become the truth
I've learned the name of the game is have no pity
I've learned it's all inside of you
You've got to throw away those sympathy feelings
Stick to your guns and make a stand
You've got to throw away those cards that they are dealing
You've got to take it while you can
The storm outside is knocking at my door
The pain it brings something you'll never know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All youe wicked nightmares you say that you don't know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All the time it's coming blow by blow
Blow by blow
Sometimes I wonder what is going wrong
Where my next heartache is coming from
I hear the thunder I know it won't be long
Before I see the night take down the sun
You've got to throw away those sympathy feelings
Stick to your guns and make a stand
You've got to throw away those cards that they are dealing
You've got to take it while you can
When it rains you know it's gonna pour
The storm outside is knocking at my door
The pain it brings something you'll never know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All youe wicked nightmares you say that you don't know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All the time it's coming blow by blow
Blow by blow
When it rains you know it's gonna pour
The storm outside is knocking at my door
The pain it brings something you'll never know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All youe wicked nightmares you say that you don't know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All the time it's coming blow by blow
Blow by blow
The pain it brings something you'll never know
All the time it's coming blow by blow
All the time it's coming blow by blow
Blow by blow
The song "Blow Boys Blow" by Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd is about taking control of your life and facing the challenges that come your way. The lyrics suggest that life is a game, and it's important to play by your own rules and not be swayed by sympathy or the cards that others deal you. The singer has seen firsthand how lies can become truth, and he knows that the true strength lies within oneself. When the storm comes knocking, it's essential to stand firm and weather the blows that life deals out. The lyrics also touch on the themes of pain and heartache, which are inevitable parts of life.
The repetition of the phrase "blow by blow" emphasizes the cyclical nature of life's struggles. Despite the pain that comes with each blow, it's important to keep pushing forward and never give up. The line "all your wicked nightmares you say that you don't know" suggests that people may deny their own fears and struggles, but they exist nonetheless. Ultimately, the song is a reminder that we all face hardships in life, but it's up to us to persevere and overcome them.
