De Me Ama
Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd Lyrics

As a sailor was walking one fine summer day
The squire and a lady were making their way
And Jack he heard the squire say
Tonight with you love I mean to lay
With me Do me ama dingy ama do me ama day
You must tie a string all around your finger
with the other end of the string hanging out the window
And I'll step by and I'll pull the string
and you must come down love and let me in
With me do me ama dingy ama do me ama day
Says Jack to hisself I've a mind to try
To see if a poor sailor he can't win that prize
So he slipped by and he pulled the string
And the lady come down and she let old Jack in
with a do me ama etc...
When the squire come by he was humming his song
Thinking to himself how it wouldn't be long
But when he got there no string he found
And behold his hopes all dashed to the ground
With a do...etc..
Early next morning it was just getting light
The lady jumped up in bed in a terrible fright
But there laid Jack in his stripey shirt
His hands all covered with tar and dirt
with a do...etc
Oh what do you want you tarry sailor
Breaking in a ladies bedroom to steal her treasure
Oh no said old Jack I just pulled the string
and you did come down ma'am and let me in
With a do me ama etc..
Says Jack to the lady oh forgive me I pray
I'll steal away very quiet at the dawn of the day
Oh no says the lady don't stray too far

For I would never part from my jolly Jack tar
With a do me ama etc..

Overall Meaning

The song "De Me Ama" is a bawdy and humorous folktale of a sailor who outwits a squire to spend the night with the squire's lady. The story is told through verses of alternating dialogue between the sailor, the squire, and the lady. The sailor overhears the squire plotting to spend the night with the lady and decides to try his luck by pulling the string tied to her finger. The lady falls for the trick and allows him in. The squire, on the other hand, finds out that the string he tied was missing and realizes that he has been outwitted by the sailor. The following morning, the lady and the sailor are caught by the squire. The sailor lies and says he pulled the string to be let in, and to his surprise, the lady covers up for him and decides to stay with him.
