"Ok, here's the short version. Kay & I became roommates March 1996 & started a group called Example (I.E.). That summer, Example & the K-Otix had a meeting about putting our music out independently. The plan was to put out a double-sided EP, one side Example & the other K-Otix. Well, things didn't go as planned, so both groups decided to do 2 seperate EPs & release them around the same time. Done deal. Kay became writing the very first song on July 26, 1996. We both produced 3 songs each on the EP. January 1997, we released our 6 song EP titled, "Impulses". We only pressed 500 copies." - Cipher

There's fight at the heart of a struggle
You're smile should've told me you're trouble
No more, no more, no more
You owned me You buried all my worth with a shovel
You're smile should've told me you're trouble
No more, no more, no more
So so long
So so long
So so long
Now
No more white lies
You used to be the one true thing in my world
You told me that you loved me
You're in love with yourself
Shoulda listen to my mother
You messed around the others
Now you're dead to me
I've been sleeping with the enemy
Should keep your best friends close by
Should keep your best friends close by
You should keep your best friends close by
But keep your enemies closer
But keep your enemies closer
So many evil talents you juggled
It's fair to say you didn't act subtle
Your smile should've told me you're trouble
No more, no more, no more
Came crashing down I'm staring at rubble
They need to send you into space in a shuttle
Your smile should've told me you're trouble
No more, no more, no more
No more goodbyes
So so long
So so long
So so long
Now
No more white lies
You used to be the one true thing in my world
You told me that you loved me
You're in love with yourself
Shoulda listen to my mother
You messed around the others
Now you're dead to me
I've been sleeping with the enemy
Should keep your best friends close by
Should keep your best friends close by
You should keep your best friends close by
But keep your enemies closer
But keep your enemies closer
Strange and deranged
Seek fame was the name of the game
Defeat rivals Abel and Kane
Get trophies they'll look great in a frame
What would you have done, take all the blame?
With your hands held firm over naked flames
Being grilled now you're shaking again
Faking the pain, dark visions of Satan
Contemplating, talking man to man
She was a girl on film Duran Duran
She called me her ape man orang-utan
Me Tarzan, she Jane
Take all the blame I'm the bloke in the chorus
We were sweet once everybody saw us
I ain't flawless still unsure
I loved us but I loved me more
You used to be the one true thing in my world
You told me that you loved me
You're in love with yourself
Shoulda listen to my mother
You messed around the others
Now you're dead to me
I've been sleeping with the enemy
Should keep your best friends close by
Should keep your best friends close by
You should keep your best friends close by
But keep your enemies closer
But keep your enemies closer
In Example's "Close Enemies," the lyrics describe a relationship that has turned toxic. The first verse talks about how the singer thought everything would turn out alright, but their partner turned out to be trouble. They also talk about how the partner buried their worth with a shovel, suggesting that they have been emotionally hurt. The chorus repeats "no more goodbyes" as the singer seems to have decided that it's time to move on from the toxic relationship.
In the second verse, the lyrics shift to describing the partner's negative qualities more directly. The partner is described as having "evil talents" and not acting subtle, which caused the relationship to come crashing down. The line "you're in love with yourself" suggests that the partner may be narcissistic. The final lines could be interpreted as the singer reflecting on their own flaws and the fact that they may have loved themselves more than the relationship. The chorus is repeated again, with the line "I've been sleeping with the enemy" suggesting that the singer has been knowingly involved with someone they perhaps should have been more wary of.
Overall, the lyrics of "Close Enemies" are about the ups and downs of a relationship gone wrong. The theme of keeping enemies closer than friends is also important, as it suggests that in some cases, it's better to know who your enemies are and be prepared for their actions.
