Exhorder was formed in 1985 in New Orleans, Louisiana. After releasing several demos in the vein of pure thrash metal, they started to adapt more of a groove metal-oriented sound with their debut studio album, Slaughter in the Vatican, released in 1990. This sound was further developed by their second (and to date last) album, The Law, released in 1992. The band dissolved later that year.
Exhorder are often credited with having created the groove-oriented thrash metal sound that was copied and popularized by Pantera. The band is either more or less indifferent to such sentiment as they were friends with Pantera and were saddened by the passing of Dimebag Darrell. However, they do not deny the possibility of them having influenced Pantera's sound even though Kyle Thomas has stated Pantera deserves the praise they receive as he feels Pantera have always worked much harder than Exhorder ever did at being successful.

The Tragic Period
Exhorder Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
About a period of tragedy
A man who thought of horrid things
But really sought what happiness brings
Terror instilled within the souls
Of men and women, young and old
Come and listen to me, my friend
He'll make your morale descend
One Boston day, it's sad to say
A newborn child was granted miserable life
Abandoned by his father and
Left alone by death of father's wife
Foster child
Tobacco exporter gave him a chance
History defiled
Twisted by literature, dark and opium enhanced
Irregularity
So far ahead of his time
A spark of a breed
Regarding all of his literature creed
Infamy of tales and poetry
Connecting his themes to his wildest dreams
The maelstrom grew but no one knew
He descended far beyond its spinning walls
Into the pit, the black abyss
His house was collapsing as he searched for El Dorado
Perched upon Pallas was life, hard and callous
The shadows of burden lifted nevermore
The vulture eye of death concealed
By wooden planks below the floor
The quest for solace evolved into sorrow
Lingering obsessions
Intoxication, stimulation, creation
Hindering addictions
Apparently the message in a bottle was lost
For I could see no conclusion
But all of us remaining in the shrouded past
Must remember to further ourselves by obtrusion
Inebriated grin leads the mighty pen
Across the paper as his fears come alive
Satiric whim ignites the brim
Of insanity as Pluto arrives
Swaying cognac barriers
And the beating of his hideous heart
Increasing ever so constantly
Conjuring the ne'er forgotten lore
'Tis only this and nothing more
The song "The Tragic Period" by Exhorder is an interpretation of the dark tale of Edgar Allan Poe's life. The lyrics depict the tragic life of Poe and how his struggles and addictions led him to write some of the most haunting literature that the world has seen. The song starts with a brief introduction to Poe's life and his tendency to think about dark and horrid things, but his true desire was to seek happiness. The next verse focuses on the tragedy that befell Poe from his birth, being abandoned by his father and losing his mother soon after. He was taken in as a foster child by a tobacco exporter, but his life was defiled by his addiction to opium.
The chorus mentions the infamy of Poe's tales and poetry, connecting them to his wildest dreams. The maelstrom grew around him, but he descended far beyond its spinning walls, into the black abyss. The song then goes on to describe Poe's addictions and obsession with his creations, bringing to light his struggles with alcohol and other addictions. The last verse depicts Poe's state of mind, as he is lost in a drunken stupor, writing about his fears and the lore that he has conjured. The song ends abruptly, stating that the message in a bottle was lost and that the past should not hinder further progress.

While Pantera did five good records and were a great band and all, one of my favorite bands actually, at least a few years back, I still have to say that comparing Slaughter In The Vatican to any Pantera album feels like all Pantera albums had some filler material, while Slaughter In The Vatican is one of most solid, kick-ass albums I've ever heard.
Ryan Diamond
But I hate the Pantera comparison, they influenced Pantera in the early days to leave the glammy crap, Kyle is a killer vocalist! Chris nail is a crushing drummer, Vinny labella is the beast, Jay ceravolo, smokes, great band , still kill, to this day, old and new!🤘🍻🇨🇦

Atleast the heavy sound has some similarities, There's a handful of albums I can think of. Another is Devastation's 'Idolatry' if you're interested.
