'Round Midnight
Eydie Gorme Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It begins to tell,
'Round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
But it really gets bad,
'Round midnight.

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart,
And I'm out of my mind.

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing,
for your returning.
Till our love is safe and sound.
And old midnight comes around.
Feelin' sad,

really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Round Midnight" by Eydie Gorme depict an individual's emotions and memories as they experience sadness and despair after sundown, particularly at midnight. The first verse shows a person who is capable of being in control until after sundown when supper time arrives, making them feel sad. However, things get even worse starting from midnight. Memories start coming back, and they are reminded of the heartbreak and pain they have experienced. The second verse intensifies this feeling of heartbreak, as the person realizes that their heart still belongs to an ex-lover, making it impossible for them to forget about the past. The song's title serves as a reminder of this misery every night.

The hopelessness of this individual's heartbreak is a central theme of the song, as they speculate if their love is ending, and if it is a bad sign that their quarrels need mending. The chorus provides a hopeful note, suggesting that the person believes that angels can sing, providing the assurance of an eventual reunion with their lovers. Thus, they hope that their love will come around once again, which initiates a cycle of pain and then hope again from the start.

Overall, "Round Midnight" hits on fundamental human emotions of love and heartbreak, especially during the hours of darkness, making it a timeless classic in Jazz.

Thank you very much for posting this. I LOVE Eydie Gorme. This is my favorite rendition of this classic Tholonius Monk melody. Eydie's voice was so pretty, rich, and pure. It was a very sad day, when she passed.

I have been looking for this forever- had it on an old cassette of my mom's, and never could find that album again. Loved this song. :)

I 've listened to many renditions of this DG anthem over the years, but this one with its solidly simple presentation of the tune, with very little variation, wipes me out. and Eydie's ending note is like the cherry on the sundae and I keep coming back for a refill.

Joanie Sommers does this very nicely also.
