The Further We Stretch
Ezio Lyrics

Sometimes…it feels like my days are through
The phone it rings always when my bath is running
Out the door with all my things
And it's all over now Baby Blue
Well you know I've got me an imaginary friend
And it's his daydreams we buy in the end
He puts it all together and I just press send
And he's a shadow behind me in the light
And he takes me walking in the park at night
He makes me do something wrong, do something right
And disappears before the morning
The further we stretch
The higher the sky
It gets harder
The harder we try
The faster we run
The longer the road
The stronger we get
The bigger the load
When I fell in love with you
It wasn't the way that I dreamt it would happen
Bells didn't ring, no violins
Or me on a horse with Nelson Eddy's hat on
You're not Jeanette McDonald
And our signs don't match
We dance with an opposite sway
You said you needed to run
And have fun, fun, fun
‘Til your Daddy took your T-Bird away
The further we stretch
The higher the sky
It gets harder
The harder we try
The faster we run
The longer the road
The stronger we get
The bigger the load
The song "The Further We Stretch" by Ezio is filled with reflective and metaphorical lyrics. The song opens with the singer expressing his feelings of uncertainty about his future, wondering whether his time is coming to an end. The phone ringing when his bath is running represents the sense of urgency in his life and the need to always be on the go, with all of his things at hand. The line "And it's all over now, Baby Blue" is a reference to the Bob Dylan song, suggesting that whatever it is that the singer is struggling with or running from has come to an end.
The second verse introduces the singer's imaginary friend who helps him through life's struggles. This friend never lets the singer break or bend, and together they create daydreams that the singer turns into reality. The idea of a "shadow behind me in the light" further emphasizes the metaphorical nature of the song, suggesting that the singer's imaginary friend is always there but remains unseen. The verse ends with the friend disappearing before the morning, leaving the singer to face the day alone.
The chorus, which is repeated throughout the song, speaks to the idea that the harder we try and the more we push ourselves, the more difficult the journey becomes. The final verse introduces a love interest who is not what the singer expected but who he loves nonetheless. The dancing with an opposite sway represents the differences that they have but ultimately still finding love. The line "you said you needed to run and have fun, fun, fun 'til your daddy took your T-Bird away" is a reference to the Beach Boys song "Fun, Fun, Fun," further emphasizing the theme of nostalgia and looking back on the past.

Sometimes…it feels like my time is coming
At times, I get a sense that my fortune is close to arriving
Sometimes…it feels like my days are through
At times, I get a sense that the end is near
The phone it rings always when my bath is running
Whenever I'm relaxing, that's when an urgent matter arises
Out the door with all my things
I have to leave quickly, taking all that I need
And it's all over now Baby Blue
Whatever it was, it's finished now
Well you know I've got me an imaginary friend
I confess to having someone in my mind who isn't real
And it's his daydreams we buy in the end
This person's fantasies are what we ultimately purchase
He won't let me break, he won't let me bend
He protects me from harm and keeps me unyielding
He puts it all together and I just press send
He does the hard work, and I just finalize the details
And he's a shadow behind me in the light
This person follows me, staying out of sight in the daylight
And he takes me walking in the park at night
He leads me for a walk in the park when darkness falls
He makes me do something wrong, do something right
He manipulates me to do both good and bad things
And disappears before the morning
He vanishes before the sunrise
The further we stretch
The more we push ourselves
The higher the sky
The greater the goals we set
It gets harder
It becomes more difficult
The harder we try
The more effort we expend
The faster we run
The swifter we move
The longer the road
The more extended the journey
The stronger we get
The more we build our strength
The bigger the load
The more significant the burden
When I fell in love with you
When I began to have romantic feelings for you
It wasn't the way that I dreamt it would happen
It didn't go the way I imagined it would
Bells didn't ring, no violins
There weren't any typical romantic signs
Or me on a horse with Nelson Eddy's hat on
There wasn't some grand, heroic gesture
You're not Jeanette McDonald
You're not the actress I imagined as my love interest
And our signs don't match
Our astrological signs aren't compatible
We dance with an opposite sway
We don't naturally move together
You said you needed to run
You claimed you had to go away
And have fun, fun, fun
And enjoy yourself as much as possible
‘Til your Daddy took your T-Bird away
Until your father put a stop to it
