I love the irony of how the caller acknowledges that Undertaker is playing a "role" but somehow still emotionally thinks "cutting his wrist" was somehow real and stunned at the image. I'm more under the impression that the guy just dislikes violence in entertainment, and because of people like him being more common in today's society is why everything is so politically correct with the current wrestling product being no exception.

I think that was a brilliant thing for Adam to say. Most fans realise that, in order to enjoy the show, you have to suspend your disbelief for the evening. You're wasting your money if you don't. However, when the lights come on, the ring is pulled down and you're out of there, it's back to real life. For this caller...it's like he never LEAVES the arena. (Adam has been through some serious injuries, he'd never say it's all fake.)

Vince McMahon used to say this regularly on Raw. There is not a one of them that comes out anymore and says that it is real, other than as a character. The WWE is quite open with the fact that professional wrestling is sports entertainment and not a sports competition.

Adding Michael Buffer to the main events was genius too, back in 1997 he was also doing the introduction for the NBA Finals between the Bulls & Jazz (bringing Karl Malone and Dennis Rodman to the mix for a year) Stuff like that just made them seem so much more legit, if Buffer was doing the intro you KNEW it was an event.

I think both sides have a legit argument. I think what you said is what the caller was trying to say, but he couldn't put the words together. He said something he didn't mean, and Edge got on him for that. That being said, Edge's initial point is also legit and kindof overrides it all. Even though Vader/Luke's hand wasn't really cut off and they didn't walk off the set with their hand literally gone, if that didn't disturb the viewer at all then the WWF/E stunt in question shouldn't either.

This one is kind of tricky, on one hand there is the issue of those in society who put too much emphasis on analyzing the validity of Pro-Wrestling in the context of realism. When in fact it is clearly theatrical and the judgment of skeptics should be questioned, not those capable of suspending disbelief. But on the other hand there is the dilemma that wrestlers are people too, and the physicality endured during performance is subjective to real life consequences.

Well, it would depend on what he is going for. If say he completes a piledriver, the impact would almost certainly be worse because the person will not know how to position their head to absorb the impact, and do no lasting damage. Think about Stone Cold being paralysed (temporarily, with lasting damage) by a piledriver from Owen Hart, due to an accident. Of course, the boy would have to get the person into the position, which is usually, with more complicated or more forceful moves like any powerbomb, difficult as it needs some help from the other person. Take this from a professional wrestler (in training).

Damn, Edge was a real jerk to that caller. I think he meant real life referencing that WWE is recorded live with few theatrics beyond lights and firecrackers. It comes off appearing more realistic then a movie. Also Edge, Darth Vader's hand was mechanical, so it does make a bit of a difference when its a hand of flesh and blood. I love you Edge, but give the guy a chance to explain what he means. When you put him on the spot then he's not going to be able to think or speak his thoughts clearly.

Yes, that is EXACTLY what I am talking about. You know your stuff. There was nothing ridiculous in WCW, it was presented as a REAL sport. I remember after Starrcade '97, all the stuff with JJ Dillon reviewing the footage to make the correct desision, stuff like keeping track of the match length...just ALL of it. WCW was WAY more authentic, they treated wrestling properly with guys that were BELIEVABLE. Meanwhile fucking Undertaker and Kane can shoot fire and lighting and set cameramen on fire

@kaye09love I agree, there is a lot of athletic ability required, and I never said that the things aren't dangerous or difficult. It is called sports entertainment, you're right! And they do that because they can't really call it a sport. While it does require strength, there is no competition (the winners are predetermined) and a lot of the things involved are engineered to look more severe than they actually are (although admittedly, some are pretty severe, such as jumping off a ladder, etc.)

Edge admits it? I'm pretty sure his point was that if you're an adult and think everything that happens in the WWE is real life, you have some issues you need to deal. It was just common sense to him. It wasn't like he was revealing some secret. And in your video info, if you're talking WWE now, if someone's head is busted and bleeding that is completely real, they don't do blood on purpose anymore because of PG rating, so anything like Lesnar's recent gash is unscripted and a real wound.

Punches and kicks and other strikes are made to look like are real, but in real life have little to no contact as possible. The Rock mentioned in one of his books how he spent lots of hours perfecting the art of pulling punches back at the last second Submissions can really hurt if the guy who puts them on really wanted to put enough pressure on the hold to do so, but they don't do that. Grapples and slams will hurt, especially if they're botched.

By this point the WWF and Raw Magazine articles were also written in a way to plainly say "this is all fake". They would often talk about superstars real lives out of the ring, what they were really like, who was friends with who, stuff like that. Quite a contrast to say, three years prior, the magazines were still written in full Kayfabe. I preferred it all in Kayfabe to be honest :/

@TheLooseCannon469 Edge was not too harsh. The WWE is "fake" in that the moves are scripted, the winners pre selected, and the storylines written to be interesting. The moves are performed safely because both wrestlers cooperate to make the moves look "real" and painful. It is real in the sense that you can't really fake being slammed on the ground, or falling. you can't fake performing the flips and jumps and running around and getting knocked down and getting up they do.

Calling wrestling "fake" at this point is redundant. For one thing it really isn't trying to be real, it's just trying to entertain. I've always looked at wrestling as a man's version of a soap opera, the man part being athletic, violence and hot women. It's important when watching wrestling that you take your analytical hat off and just enjoy it for what it is. Edge is money, great interview always. He goes on Bubba the love sponge and is great everytime.

Another thing to point out the haters calling it "Fake", not only do they not understand the physical and mental training a wrestler goes through to become one, or do they understand the actual psychology that goes into a match, or the pain wrestlers endure.... They also ONLY GET ONE TAKE!!! Movies are fake too, but at least actors aren't in front of 1000s of people and have all the time in a work day to get it right. Wrestlers only get ONE shot, ONE take, and ONE chance not to mess up.

the reason you never heard them is because they are professionals lol, they have ear pieces that tell them when the camera is on them and when it is not, and yes ALL PRO WRESTLING MATCHES ARE PRE DETERMINED, all outcomes are planned, and no the moves are not planned, they are called while in the ring between the workers/wrestlers. sometimes certain moves will be planned ahead of time just for the sake of certain angles, like when big show colapsed that ring, or undertaker got put through it

I know the vast majority of the 'stunts' aren't real and more than not the wrestler is largely unaffected however moreso in the past or at pay per views the risks are increased and they are as you said very real. Also many wrestles turn to drugs such as painkillers and steroids for a number of reasons contributing to a 7x higher death rate in wrestles than the general public at the same age. If you watch the documentary beyond the mat you will see it's less fake than you may think

There's a different between fake and scripted, if you've watched the wwe people have gained permanent injuries, and people like owen hart have died( it's not as easy as it looks). Yes the moves are practiced safely but accidents do happen, to me it's entertainment like movies and such; people don't go around saying movies are fake, because they are but we still love them. The sports entertainers in the wwe should gain respect for the risks they take, and the great performers they are.

1992 was actually the last year I really liked WWF, but WCW was really good at that same time & even some years after, especially in 1993-1994. Pre-Hogan 1994 WCW was my favorite era of that company though it was still good for a while after Hogan came. But unfortunately a lot of WCW's own wrestlers started leaving within 1-2 years of Hogan's arrival (Vader, Cactus Jack, Steve Austin, Brian Pillman, Rom Simmons, Dustin Rhodes, Johnny B Badd, Maxx Payne, etc).

It's the year 2012, not 1970s. Who still doesn't know what professional wrestling is? I hope anyone who is out of grade school knows it's a choreographed live television show with pre-determined winners, and scripted segments, not "fake". The dialogue is usually improvised, ( Most are planned in a chain ). Professional wrestling is one of the most dangerous careers to have. You train for years to know how to pull off a show for the fans without hurting anyone. Accidents still happen, it's life.

You never would have seen moves like The Peoples Elbow or Scotty 2 Hottys Worm in WCW in those days either. It's a shame once WCW started getting beat up in the ratings they tried to change their programming more like the WWF. Obviously lots of things led to their demise but they were really doing things right for a while.

I think what the guy meant by "real life" was that it's not set up like a movie. It's set up like it's their lives and he wasn't expecting something like that to happen because he was conditioned to think that stuff like that won't happen when watching wrestling.

If it happened in 1980s NWA, where it was always presented as a legitimate sport, it’d be a different question.

He doesn´t say wrestling is actually fake, he says that wrestling isn´t real life (being at home, at school or at work) BUT that it´s sports entertainment and that´s just what it is! It is entertainment, I totally agree with you in that point but the wrestlers in the ring really have pain and they really suffer and they´re really happy when they win!

I don’t watch wrestling, but I knew as a child that the drama seemed absolutely fake and could tell the camera changes during some of the contact seemed suspicious.

I do believe that the athletes work hard to put on a good show for the fans though.

what edge says is completely right you have to understand what you see.it is not a sport[althought it is dangerous and has risks like serious injuries]it is just a show and if you take it seriously,then it is your fault.and it isnt such big a secret that wwe and other similar shows are fake and scripted.They do not compete,the winner is already known,the two wrestlers have already discussed the moves etc.But still sometimes it is pretty impressive[and funny] and theydo bust their heads sometimes

When I was 6 years old I also thought that the WWE was real. Years ago when I was 13 I realized it's as entertaining as a movie. Like it or not that's the WWE. Edge is right.

I like how even though Edge was breaking kayfabe talking about it being entertainment and not real, he still stayed in heel character, that's the weird-ass blurred line you get with wrestling since the internet!

It's just as entertaining as it ever was, you're just older now, I went to Summer slam in the early 90s, epic night even though by then I had pretty much got bored of wrestling, it's a kids thing, you grow out of it, it dosen't stop being fun for people.

It doesn't matter that it's fake. They decide if you win, if you are overall better than your opponent. Usually kids want to wrestle on tv, but then they find out that it's not real life and they don't want to anymore. That almost happened to me, except I loved the buisness so much that even the truth didn't affect my thinking.

You'd have to be a child to think wrestling is real. It's sport entertainment. Don't get me wrong because even though wrestling is scripted, these wrestlers still put there body on the line. There has been many incidents in wrestling, it's like how some say... you can't fake gravity. I'm a wrestling fan, and I know wrestling is scripted but it's damn sure entertaining to watch. I thank these wrestlers for risking their lifes for the sake of our entertainment.

Edge is write it's scripted, it's just like a movie or a tv show. You sit down and they make you "believe" there beating the shit out of each other, it's no different then Sylvester Stallone beating up Harrison ford on a movie set

But you can't deny that it takes A LOT of talent to do that. These wrestlers bust their asses everyday in the gym to keep up their insanely muscled bodies. And it would take a lot of practice/training to pull off those moves without hurting each other and still making it look real. And remember Chris Benoit and how he had brain damage that led him to go mad? That was from his signature move, headbutting his opponent's rib cage which led to several concussions. You can't fake that.

It really cracks me up when you admit to watching wrestling, and people are like "Um...don't you know it's fake?" No. Shit. It's entertainment, just like any other show on television. The "fighting" is a bunch of smoke and mirrors, and the champions are chosen on the basis of their marketability (or sometimes in spite of it). But that doesn't make it any less entertaining. And it's funny that those who criticize it for being fake are often reality TV fans -___-
