Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann (take my hand)
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
You've got me rockin' and a-rollin'
Rockin' and a-reelin'
Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann

Went to a dance
Looking for romance
Saw Barbara Ann
So I thought I'd take a chance
Barbara Ann, take my hand
You've got me rockin' and a-rollin'
Rockin' and a reelin'
Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann

Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann (take my hand)
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
You've got me rockin' and a-rollin'
Rockin' and a reelin'
Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann

Tried Betty Sue
Tried Betty Lou
Tried Mary Sue
But I knew it wouldn't do
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann
You've got me rockin' and a-rollin'
Rockin' and a reelin'
Barbara Ann
Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann

Ba ba ba ba Barbara Ann

Overall Meaning

"Barbara Ann" is a classic rock 'n' roll song by The Beach Boys, but the version being interpreted here is the cover by Italian songwriter and singer Fabrizio De André, better known as F. De André. The song is about a man who goes to a dance looking for love but falls for a woman named Barbara Ann. He asks her to take his hand, and she has him "rockin' and a-rollin'" with her irresistible charm. The man had tried other women like Betty Sue, Betty Lou, and Mary Sue, but he knew they wouldn't do. The song repeats the chorus several times, as the man is clearly enchanted with Barbara Ann and the way she makes him feel.

F. De André's version is notable because it is entirely in Italian except for the chorus, which remains in English. He also adds some musical flourishes not found in the original Beach Boys version, such as a harmonica solo. The song was released on F. De André's 1979 album "Non al denaro non all'amore né al cielo" and became one of his most popular tracks. While the original song is a fun, upbeat piece of nostalgia, F. De André's interpretation adds a layer of longing and sentimentality with his tender vocals.
