@Mary Antonio I can only make a guess on that point but maybe the mice follow a certain direction due to wind- and snowformation-directions or they might have similar habbits. Another possibility would be the interference of some kind with the magnetic field which is somehow linked to the mice.

My first Border Collie used to do this in the tall grass in our field. I always thought he was just a weirdo and I never seen him actually catch anything but he definitely tried. I always figured it was mice he was after. It's really interesting to see that this is a trait that other Canidae actually use to survive. Amazing to say the least.

Another possibility for the fox being more successful when aiming north is the prey noticing the slight change in light from the fox's shadow on the snow if the fox is leaping from the South, cause that's the direction the sunlight is.

Except that most foxes are nocturnal or hunt at dawn/dusk when the sun isn't even out. Which makes this even more impressive. I got to see one hunt in real life once, and it's like an art! They are so cool and collected, you don't even know they're hunting, they just stroll along as if going on a walk and then they freeze and stand very still before jumping. There's no chasing, or growling, no aggression, just a silently calculated and so elegantly executed kill.

I doubt it is just lining up the (magnetic) north pole that helps the fox. He might also sense the disturbance in the magnetic field the mouse creates and aims for it.
