Just Friends
FISH FEAT. SAM BROWN Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's something I want to ask you
Before it's too late,
It's been on my mind since the first time we met
It scares me now more, now there's more at stake,
It seems we`re so close yet so far away.

Could you turn me down gently would I
Be out of order,
If I declared my true feelings or do I
Act out the part,
Of the father confessor of the shoulder to cry on
We're always so close yet so far away

What would you do if I got down
On my knees to you
Would you hold it against me,
Would you stand in line?
What would you do if I
Opened my heart to you,
Would I be another who's wasting his time,
Darling are we just good friends?

Do I really need to ask you
I`m sure that you know by now,
Do we just play a game where we try to pretend,
That all that's between us is all that's between us,
And all we can rely on is just being good friends.

What would you do if I got down
On my knees to you
Would you hold it against me,
Would you stand in line?
What would you do if I
Opened my heart to you,
Would I be another who's wasting his time,
Darling are we just good friends?

So are we left to chance meetings,
Is that all we can depend on?
Resigned to raise glasses in anonymous cafes,
Reciting our failures as if we needed
Proof or regret,

Over what might have
And what should have been, Darling, are we just good friends?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Just Good Friends" by Fish feat. Sam Brown explore the theme of unrequited love and the uncertainty that surrounds the relationship between the two individuals. Fish begins by admitting that he has something important to ask before it's too late and acknowledges that he has been thinking about it since they first met. However, he fears that now the stakes are higher, it is harder to confront his true feelings. He acknowledges that they appear to be close, but they feel far away from each other.

The chorus of the song is a series of questions posed by Fish to Brown, which can be interpreted as him pondering about whether his feelings towards her are reciprocated. He wonders how she would react if he got down on his knees and opened his heart to her. He questions whether he would be wasting his time or whether they are simply "good friends." Towards the end of the song, Fish contemplates whether all they have between them is a chance meeting or whether there is something more significant there that they are not acknowledging.

Overall, the lyrics of "Just Good Friends" are a profound exploration of the complexities of relationships, and the fear and unease that comes with expressing one's feelings to another person.

It scares me now more now there's more at stake
It seems we're so close but we're so far away

What would you do if I got down on my knees to you?

Would you hold it against me? Darling, would you stand me in line?
What would you do if I opened up my heart to you?
Would I just be another who is wasting his time?
Darling, are we just good friends? Alright

In anonymous cafes

Reciting our failures
As if we really needed that proof of regret
Over what might have and what should have been
Darling, are we just good friends?

What would you do if I got down on my knees to you?
Would you hold it against me? Would you stand in line?
What would you do if I opened up my heart to you?
Would I just be another who is wasting his time?
Darling, are we just good friends?

Are we just good friends?
Tell me, darling, are we just good friends?

@Judith Bayes Another message I can't remember writing but I completely agree with myself here. I shall have to send a message to myself complimenting me on my well thought out choice. It'll make a change from the recent hostilities between me.

I've taken to hiding behind the bins and waiting for myself to get home from work. When I hear me walking up the path, I jump out, shout a rude name and then fill myself in. It's not good for either of us.

Thanks Judith. It's good to know that someone else sees things the same way. Kate, Derek, please just get on with it. It worked pretty well with Stuart Adamson (RIP) and Big Country. The Seer is a great song.

That reminds me. I must get on to Aimee Mann and try to get her to release the tapes we made. The ones of us covering Copacabana at Ronnie Corbett's 78th birthday celebration in the Electrical Engineering Fellowship social club, Worksop, 1993. Not those other tapes.

Hang on... is this another one of those dream Vs. reality things again...?

@NicholasBerry-ku9rd

@Judith Bayes Yes, Stuart was born in Manchester to Scottish parents and moved with them to a village near Dunfermline when he was very young. You can hear his Scottish heritage in his music, particularly the early stuff. The band changed their sound over the years, partly because they were interested in a wide range of music and partly, I think, because they got a bit sick of lazy journalists babbling on about 'bagpipe guitars'!

A great singer, songwriter and guitarist. Also, by all the accounts of everyone who knew him, a really lovely bloke too. It's such a tragic loss and shocking still. His bandmate and close friend, Bruce Watson, played guitar with Fish on some of his albums and live shows. Bruce has turned up on Fish on Fridays too. A warm, funny and interesting guy.

Big Country were the first band I saw live. At The Octagon in Sheffield, December 5th 1987, when I was fifteen. The experience was absolutely beautiful and emotionally overwhelming. The music of course but also the band's presence on stage, the atmosphere, the crowd, the love between the band and their audience.

I rarely have the same reaction to music that I had when I was young but even now, when I listen to something like Big Country's 'Restless Natives' or 'Porrohman', I get the same clutch in the chest, hairs standing up on the back of the neck, tears springing to the eyes sort of thing that I got when I first heard them.

Thanks for your kind words and please accept my apologies for getting carried away with writing a lot of nonsense. I do that sometimes. I don't think I have a bag as such but if I did, I imagine it would be split at the bottom with the loaf falling out into a puddle and the tins of soup and baked beans rolling down the hill. There I go again....

Never knew this existed. What a great song - love their voices together.

@jmn1234

In 2001 I reunited with my high school sweatheart after 20 years. We were both in not-so-great marriages. As we were rediscovering each other, I sent her this song. The response I got from her set us on a path where we got married in 2003. It was a dificult, scary, wonderful time. My dream came true against all odds. Sadly, she passed in 2018. I am thankful for every minute I got to spend with her. Who knows? Without this song we may have continued life without ever knowing...
