Cigarette
FLØRE Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I’ve been living so caged
How come all I think about is running away
You’ve been hiding your face
and I thought it had to deal with me but
You said
Don’t tell my dad or your gunna get in trouble I’ll tell him about the drugs
You’ve been hiding under your bed
I’m not dumb I got your keys
before you thought you could judge me
The fool is all in your head
The fool is all in your head
You said
Seems like today it takes a death
To appreciate what i took easily and wished away for a stupid thing
Cause I’ve been hanging by a thread
You said
Don’t let every opinion bother you
Till it gets inside your head
Then controls the next move u make
Your not this easy to break
Why can’t you take a break from your cigarette?
It isn’t gunna kill you
Like it kills me
When you leave me
Unanswered In the blue

Why? Since it sucks to be with you
It isn’t gunna kill you

Overall Meaning

In FLØRE's song Cigarette, the singer confesses to feeling trapped and eager to escape her current situation, while also empathizing with someone who is going through their own struggles. The opening lines reveal her sense of confinement, saying "I've been living so caged, how come all I think about is running away?" She then turns her attention to someone else, who she believes is hiding something from her. However, when they speak, it becomes clear that they are trying to hide something from their own father, and the singer should not be involved. The lines "Don’t tell my dad or you're gonna get in trouble, I’ll tell him about the drugs, you’ve been hiding under your bed," underscore the heavy burdens that people must carry, often unseen by others.

The bridge of the song tackles the theme of taking things for granted, singing "Seems like today it takes a death, to appreciate what I took easily and wished away for a stupid thing." FLØRE then offers some advice based on her own experiences; encouraging others to guard against outside opinions which can control one's thoughts and actions. She wants the listener to know that they are not as "easy to break" as they may think. The line "Why can’t you take a break from your cigarette, it isn’t gonna kill you, like it kills me when you leave me unanswered in the blue," is a metaphor for how insignificant things can have a big impact on one's life, such as someone not responding to a message. The song ultimately ends with the repeated line "It isn’t gonna kill you," which is a message of hope and encouragement for whoever may be listening.
