I Heard It Through The Grapevine

'Bout your plans to make me blue
With some other guy you knew before
Between the two of us guys
You know I loved you more
It took me by surprise I must say
When I found out yesterday
Don't you know that I heard it through the grapevine
Oh I heard it through the grapevine
Oh I'm just about to lose my mind
Honey, honey yeah.
I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine baby
I know a man ain't supposed to cry
But these tears I can't hold inside
Losin' you would end my life you see
'Cause you mean that much to me
You could have told me yourself
That you loved some one else
Instead I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine
Oh, I heard it through the grapevine
And I'm just about to lose my mind
Honey, honey yeah
I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine, baby
People say believe half of what you see
Son and none of what you hear
But I can't help but be confused
If it's true please tell me dear
Do you plan to let me go
For the other guy you loved before?
Don't you know I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine, baby yeah
I heard it through the grapevine
I'm just about to love my mind
Honey, honey, yeah
I heard it through the grapevine,
Not much longer would you be mine, baby yeah
The song "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" was originally written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, but it was Marvin Gaye's version released in 1968 that became the biggest success, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's lyrics tell the story of a man who learns that his lover is leaving him for someone else through the rumor mill, represented by the "grapevine." The singer is hurt and heartbroken that she didn't tell him herself, and he feels like he's about to lose his mind over the news.
The use of the grapevine metaphor in the song is an interesting one, as it was a common term used during the Civil War to describe how information was passed from person to person through a network of soldiers, messengers, and telegraph lines. The grapevine concept has since been applied to any method of information sharing that is not official or sanctioned, such as rumors, gossip, and hearsay.
The emotional impact of the song is heightened by Marvin Gaye's soulful vocals and the driving rhythm of the music. The lyrics are full of despair and vulnerability, and Gaye delivers them with the kind of passion and intensity that made him one of the greatest singers of his generation. The song has since been covered by many other artists, including Gladys Knight & The Pips, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and California Raisins, among others.

So great to see this video up here. I remember watching this when it came out and the rock programme was on ITV on Saturday morning at 2am!! I'd forgotten Andy had a Frankenstein Jackson guitar, which I think glowed in the dark!!

Weird finding this after all this time, but saw FM perform this live when they were supporting Whitesnake in 1994-ish. It was much more heavy-rocky than this and blew us away to be honest. We were concerned as to whether Mr.Coverdales guys could keep their end up so to speak ;-)
