Cheer Up
FOO FIGHTERS Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was meant to be
But all along it never meant a thing
Never stopped to ask you why
You didn't pass me by
Did you see me when your life
Flash before your eyes?
Was it just that I wasn't hard enough?
Hard enough for you

(Stop, stop, stop, stop)
Stop using my (stop, stop, stop, stop)
(Stop, stop, stop, stop)
Confusion (stop, stop, stop, stop)
(Stop, stop, stop, stop)
Wait, wait
There's a world out there
(There's a world out there)
Don't you deny me
(Don't you deny me)
Give me one last wish
(Give me one last wish)
There's a world out there

Elementary
I solved them all
All your mysteries
Settle down and in good time
We can solve all mine
Tell me lies or tell me when
Tell me off again
And I will let you know
When I've had enough
Had enough of you

(Stop, stop, stop, stop)
Stop using my (stop, stop, stop, stop)
(Stop, stop, stop, stop)
Confusion (stop, stop, stop, stop)
(Stop, stop, stop, stop)
Wait, wait
There's a world out there
(There's a world out there)
Don't you deny me
(Don't you deny me)
Give me one last wish
(There's a world out there)
There's a world out there
(Don't you deny me)

Know you've got your reasons
Hey, let's call it even
Turn out all the lights and go to bed
Still I get this feeling
No one will believe me
When I let these ghosts outside my head

There's a world out there
(There's a world out there)
Don't you deny me
(Don't you deny me)
Give me one last wish
(Give me one last wish)
Don't you deny me
(Don't you deny me)
There's a world out there
(There's a world out there)
Don't you deny me
(Don't you deny me)
Give me one last wish
(There's a world out there)

There's a world out there
(Don't you deny me)

Overall Meaning

"Cheer Up" by FOO FIGHTERS is a song about the disappointment and realization of unrequited love. The singer had believed that there was a connection between them and his/her love interest. However, as time passed by, they didn't end up together, and in retrospect, the singer feels that everything was just a delusion. The lines "It was meant to be, but all along it never meant a thing" suggest the singer thought that they had a deep bond, but it was just a figment of his/her imagination. The singer didn't even ask why the love interest didn't reciprocate, which shows a lack of communication and a failure to understand why the other person isn't interested. The lines "Did you see me when your life, Flash before your eyes?" suggest that the singer wants to know if he/she ever crossed the love interest's mind.

The lyrics also highlight the theme of confusion as the singer wants the love interest to give him/her clarity about where they stand. The lines "Stop using my confusion" indicate that the singer wants things to be straightforward, which is not happening as the love interest is sending mixed signals. The phrase "There's a world out there" is a message to the love interest that they shouldn't deny the singer of the chance to explore other options and that there is more to life than them. The chorus "Give me one last wish, there's a world out there" is the singer's plea to the love interest to let him/her move on.

Overall, the song conveys the idea of coming to terms with unrequited love and wanting to move forward despite the hurt and heartbreak.

this concert overall has to be one of the best performances in modern music history

Jordan Howell

Really? I’ll have to check it out more. I was just thinking Id like to buy the dvd or whatever, I’ve only seen like a couple songs from it. And they’re one of my favorite bands ever .

Jesse Rikk

Foo Fighters are the reason I ever picked up a guitar or started singing. Best motivation I’ve found and the reason I started putting covers up on YouTube. Best live show I’ve ever been to as well!!

tristan knobluach

Don't plug your own shit here dude...

Joel Ortega

What a incredible way to make spam

Jesse Rikk

tristan knobluach I get where you’re coming from but what I said is all true. Love me some Foos. I put way more effort into it than the people throwing up a half-assed Cover with bad sound and a stationary camera angle so yeah I’d like to get them noticed. Before the “make your own shit instead of stealing from other artists” comes into play...I do but with no following yet covers and “spamming” are the lowlife shit we’re reduced to to gain some attention from people with similar music taste. Sorry?

Jesse Rikk

Joel Ortega gotta find some way to get a click or two. Putting a lot of time and effort in so I’ve gotta cover all my bases while just starting out. Feels shitty to “spam” but it’s a good plan for finding people with the same music taste. Any better suggestions are absolutely welcome

Hanif Suffian Bin Mohd Nazri

Great cover man, i love everlong the most. I also own a guitar because of them too.

Bat Supimpa

suikogarden

I'm gonna miss the snare-hit face. Rest in peace, Taylor.
