Going Out With the Tide
FREDDY FENDER Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Silver wings
Shinning in the sunlight
Roaring engines
Headed somewhere in flight
Their taking you away
And leaving me lonely
Silver wings
Slowly fading out of sight
Don't leave me I cry
Don't take that airplane ride
But you locked me out of your mind
Left me standing here behind

Silver wings
Shining in the sunlight

Roaring engines
Headed somewhere in flight
Their taking you away
Leaving me lonely
Silver wings
Slowly fading out of sight
Silver wings
Shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines
Headed somewhere in flight
Their taking you away
Leaving me lonely

Silver wings slowly fading out of sight
Slowly fading out of sight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Freddy Fender's "Going Out With the Tide" speak of a love that is slipping away. The image of silver wings shining in the sunlight and roaring engines headed somewhere in flight is used as a metaphor for the loved one who is leaving. The singer is left behind and pleading with their lover not to leave them. The repetition of the words "leaving me lonely" and "slowly fading out of sight" add to the sense of loss and desperation in the song.

The use of the metaphor of the silver wings is interesting in that it is a common symbol associated with flight and travel. It is interesting to note that Fender himself had a fear of flying and often traveled by car, despite his fame as a performer. The song was written by Merle Haggard, who also recorded his own version of the song. It was released in 1970 and was a commercial success, reaching number 16 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Fender's version was released in 1975 and became his first top 10 hit on the same chart.
