I've been with the souls franchise for quite some time now probably like a lot of people my age. The most wonderful thing about the community is you can completely ignore it and have fun with the game.

After a few games under my belt I realized that nobody cares if you've soloed bosses or how good you are at the game. It really just comes down to what enjoyment you are getting out of it.

If somebody is so ingrained into a community that they're enjoyment of the game is vicariously shared with others and you all enjoy testing yourself and pushing your skill and talking with each other about it. Fair enough. Have fun.

But to think that the creator of the game put ashes of war, options to make the game less stressful if you hit a wall, etc and so forth into the game, just so he could say 'that's not the right way to play it?' That's idiocy.

Try getting off a 40-hour work week and throwing your brain against the wall that is Melania. That's simply just not fun

It's actually funny because I think the spirit ashes are the intended way to play the game.

-You get the bell at the start
-You are expected to find more summons as you explore
-you are expected to level up the bell
- and the game deliberately tells you whenever you can use it.
-unlike prior souls games you can summon as many times as you want with no loss of a permanent resource unlike other souls games.
- also many of the later game bosses feel balanced around summons.

Not using core systems of the game is not developer intentions. That's a challenge run.

Same dudes are the ones who make it almost impossible to get a friend into a souls game. Right out of the tutorial on DS3, you get end-game builds invading you and rarely see a friendly summon sign. "Why don't you just play offline", then they say I'm playing the game wrong.

I went outside after I died, killed the knights and summoned me up 2 homies. And we killed Pontiff. I'm not bad, or a skill issue cuz' the rest of the game wasn't very notable, I just used what I had to get past a speed bump. Or in this case a speed wall. I don't know anything about Elden yet, very poor cannot afford it yet. Do not spoil please.

It's an action rpg, problems (the enemies) can be solved by either an action solution (getting really good at dodging and understanding timings of when to attack and stuff) or an rpg solution (changing gear, using summons and/or various spells strategically, etc) For some reason some people get real mad when you take the rpg solution, but the game very clearly offers both as potential options.

Spirit summons especially the mimic tear were my favourite mechanic in the game and as for Melania, I died to her about 15 times but once I realised she had a second phase i just changed my build to rivers of blood and destroyed her ass, it was very satisfying seeing her fall so easily 😀. I like a challenge but not at the expense of my enjoying the game.

It's supposed to be a game, but the moment you meet the criteria for invasion, you've got a random chance that Mr rot/bleed/frostbite is going to show up, then act like it's your fault for not playing his way.

The tragedy of the Souls series is that it was advertised on its difficulty, when originally, the game wasn't actually that hard. It was punishing, yes, but there's a difference. DS1 wanted you to play by a certain set of rules. It wanted to you observe your environment, observe your enemies, keep calm, take your time, and figure out how to manipulate your situation. Separate the fast guys from the slow guys, don't let ranged attackers whittle you down. That sort of thing. If you could do that, then yeah, you needed a little mechanical skill, but not that much. It was only when you tried to blast through, to brute force bad solutions, to not observe, that the game punished you by requiring more skill to beat, and even then, it still wasn't impossible.

Unfortunately, the game fell prey to its own marketing, and the difficulty became mythologized. That, coupled with the notoriously bad balance along the way(ds2 was probably the best in this regard, despite its bland pve), created a subsection of the fandom which started using the game as a source of validation and gatekeeping. Most souls players, however, just want to experience and share the joy of exploring and overcoming From's worlds. Even when I was heavily into the invasion scene, I just wanted a good fight and a way to share the heart-pounding excitement of invasions that I experienced when I got invaded. I don't think most of us are the type that tries to swing their e-peen around just because they beat Midir naked and probably lost all of their friends while doing so.

Pretty much. I do sympathize somewhat with the tryhards, as some of the most fun i had in dark souls was learning movesets and fighting bosses alone. Nameless king, midir, and Gael were just breathtaking and fun to fight. It didn't take me too many tries but just the feeling of getting better is something i always enjoy, but i know that some people enjoy the feeling of their character being stronger, of trivializing hard enemies etc. My only problem with the "cheese gamer" style is when you optimize the fun out of the game, but no fromsoft game has come anywhere near that point. Main example i can think of is Warframe, where at higher levels you could just hit a button and run through the mission. 0 shooting or casting just a mad sprint to the finish line.

You forgot the best part, you can't brute force your way through during your first playthrough but on subsequent playthroughs you will find ways to exploit the enemy's weakness and thus make it seems like you brute forced your way through. It makes how far you have come really apparent.

Example : To new players, Smough's uppercut hammer charge is something to be feared and dodging it is near impossible so you can't disrespect him. To experienced players, they know that the pillars can be used to block his uppercut so they can fight him on even footing and potentially be more aggressive as a result, and you can stunlock him on the second hit of reinforced club further improving your aggression. You get the point.

you're really minimizing the difficulty by just listing off how to optimally play the game. even when played optimally things arent easy. i think most souls vets would agree that they know the principles of how to get thru a souls game, but they wouldnt concede that know this makes the game easy. the game is not being called hard by just the people who try and brute force their way thru. Iv no hit the first dark souls game and beat it with 1 foot, the fact that this is possible doesnt mean the game isnt hard. Idk why you've decided that having to performing mechanics is the benchmark for what makes something hard. difficulty comes in more than one form.

you could take any random Joe, tell them the best principles to play the game, and I have no doubt they will have a hard time with the game.

@This Donut Honestly, I don't think that someone decently familiar with video games, when informed on the systems and expectations of DS, would have more than moderate difficulty. Learning the game was always more of a challenge than executing what you've learned in DS1. DS1's mechanics weren't some new extreme in video game difficulty, they were just poorly explained and punished you for every mistake.

Cause after all the challenge runs and playthru's iv done of ds1 thru ds3, elden ring was still a challenge for me and many other vets despite our extensive knowledge on soulsborne games. Probably because even with knowing the series principles you're still forced to go thru the inevitable trial and error parts of the game. You dont know enemy windups, you dont know their move sets, you dont know their stats, you dont know the enemy's damage, and you dont know know whats around every corner. Elden ring is of course its own beast, but the principles from DS1 largely carry over to it.

I played a chunk of Elden Ring while being killed in two hits (that includes fighting Rhadon). It burned me out and I haven't finished the game because I spent too much time fighting the same boss 300 times due to me not leveling up. Even if I can eventually win, there's no reward for getting burned out. After beating the skin apostle, I didn't feel this moment of victory because I was still getting easily killed afterwards.

To be fair, light/unarmored is the way to go. Its a little tougher at first but once you acclimate those extra invincibility frames when dodging are incredible. Played through it once with light armor and I dont think I can go back.

As a From veteran, I can tell you that it's ok to play however you want. Summons, co-op, status effects, spells, whatever. But also, "git gud" is correct. Take your time, and learn how to play. Practice makes perfect. And you don't need to be perfect to beat the game.

Actually Miyazaki said he wants people to play the way you were playing; find powerful stuff to whoop the boss, so use your head not your trial and error grind. that’s why they changed the bosses from being predictable after couple fights to very unpredictable in ER

Not really unpredictable- they just upped the amount of things bosses can do and how you deal with them. Delayed attacks, combo extenders, double hits that make you rely on positioning. You can either use the powerful weapons the game gives you to beat the boss, or you can learn their ins and outs till you can no-hit them. Thats why I like these games- it lets you play whatever way you'll have the most fun

I played Dark Souls Remastered recently, and I actually think it's a LOT easier than people make it out to be. Sure, the start is rough as you don't have much health, but once you learn the mechanics, get a few levels in, try out a few weapons, hone your skills, it gets easier. The bosses seem less like unstoppable obstacles and more like bosses, attacks you can learn to respond to in all the different ways sepcific to your playstyle. Yeah, Ornstein and Smough were a bit tough, but most of the bosses I beat first try; Four kings, Sif, Nito, Demon Firesage, Gwynn, lord of cinder, Gaping Dragon, Capra Demon, Crossbreed Priscilla, all defeated FIRST. TRY.

And you know how I did it? By grinding souls, Finding gear, and honing my skills just like any other RPG. Sure, the skill floor's a little higher, but nowhere near the "You HAVE to be a gamer legend that consumes 41 grams of caffeine per second TO EVEN BEAT TAUROS DEMON" Level of difficulty that pop-culture-osmosis told me. Yes, it's DARK SOULS. Yes, the game pulls out unfair tricks at you sometimes; but you never have to fall for them twice. You can learn, adapt, grow, and overcome untill when you finally find nito, your gear and your skills carroes you through and with a magic pixel left you take him down FIRST. TRY.

and I believe that whatever advantages the game gives you, YOU SHOULD TAKE. This is DARK SOULS, not a nuzzlocke of pokemon ruby; use all the advantages you can find and adapt and OVERCOME.

I started on and played a lot of DS3. When DSR came out, pretty much the same story; downed most bosses on the first attempt. The not-so-secret technique of leveling up wisely, upgrading your gear, rolling at the moment of impact and attacking from the flank pretty much doesn't change. Actually thought the stage hazards and pit falls were the most annoying part of the whole thing.
And as I'm writing this it sounds like a flex ("Dark Souls is ez dude") but it's really not. It's challenging, but it is just another sub-genre with its own skillset to master.

Idk what game you played but i died a lot and it's too Google wiki the solution to beat this boss kinda gameplay. I once saw a tutorial on how to beat that guy with the big club in the low level of a spiral staircase, and the guy explaining it on YouTube was showing how to go in and out of a door upstairs to get him to leave you for a moment when you can strike rinse and repeat -_- i beat him normally jumping and backstabbing him like a million times and after that i was like wtf did i do all this time. The underground levels are totally like trying to find dropped house keys in the grass at night. Annoying af

Good job sir you know how to adapt and overcome, alot of casuals just dont get it and are quick to rely on cheesing there way through the whole game. I still haven't played dark souls 1 yet I started on dark souls 2 and I put 800+ glorious hours on that game (mostly being a invader) I learned the mechanics, to dodge, and build my characters. I really learned to love playing cosplays.

In my opinion, if you want the Elden ring experience: do what ever you want and enjoy the game however you want

If you want the dark souls experience: either play dark souls or avoid bleed builds and mimic tear.

At the end of the day it's your gameplay experience tho so go wild

I been playing the souls games for years and I hate when people say, "That isn't how your suppose to play the game." Using bows, bleed , magic and summons is still fun. I don't care about challenge runs to much.

Thing is, everyone should play however they want and that's cool! But there is something special about learning a bosses patterns until you are a good at dodging, spacing, and killing them. Ashes, Summons, and Certain Spells and Weapon Arts distract from that, makes it unnecessary. However, that is only one way to approach the game. Nuking shit with well synergized/overpowered builds can be hella fun as well.

@Phoenix Agree, personnaly i am from softwere veteran but during my first playthrough istill did used bleed build and summons :D (bleed build was accident, just wanted to make samurai build) on secong though i will go strength faith build and most likely no summons, but its so cool mechanic so i am not sure about that, its fun becuase you can make thematic builds with it.

There is a funny and sad Elden Ring story I want to share. I have been playing these games full Strength build with a big chunk of wood, metal, rock e.t.c (not a greatsword but hammers, axes, club) I was conditioned by the community to believe the only manly way is to play nude with a great weapon or to carry something weaker or simply punch stuff barehanded. As I played the games I realized I love a blend of Faith/Intelligence build not just for the Hexes but also the versatility of being an arch-mage using all spells in the game for both melee and long range. Then I got to Elden Ring and oh damn it has a mount, all of its weapons and magic are damn awesome and it even has summons to help you. At first I played the "manly" way nude carrying a big club just to prove a worthless point but finally realized its fucking stupid. I shut down the stupidity and I just started a new playthrough planning to build a heavily armored all mage using both Sorceries/Incantations to tank up close and beat the game with spells and some weapon arts. I defeated Battlemage Hugue at level 30 using Carian Slicer and then sunmoned him in Margit and defeated him minutes together. It was hilarious as fuck. Just play the games the way you love.

Well it affects me when people spam broken spells and ashes of war in pvp. A lot of the time I pretty much only lose duels when that happens. Also when invasions are always a 3 vs 1. As for pve people are ruining the game for themselves and ER gains a bad reputation for being unbalanced. I really hope they severely limit magic and summons in the future like in sekiro and kind of bloodborne. ER was a huge step back in that regard

I will be honest, status effects were how me and my brother made it through much of the game in our first run. Using rot, bleed and frost almost constantly. We still had a lot of fun, and in our second run, we ended self imposed a ban on a lot of easiest ways to inflict those statuses. There should be no shame in how you choose to play.

Just wanna throw out that my build was 100% focused on making that Ezekial Breath dragon move do more damage, and it carried me through the game. Like every talisman and a few armor pieces all did stuff for it. I 3 shotted Morgott with it before he could attack, and even after two big nerfs its more than enough to one shot players in PvP. And you can cast it MIDAIR. I love it.

But yeah I agree. I USED to be like this when DS1 first came out, but now its more "pick the silliest build you can and have fun".

Did a solo of Malenia without RoB or Bloodhound's Step to deal with Waterfowl Dance, I'm not gonna impose those standards for a fight on anyone 'cuz that consumed a weekend for me.

as long as you aren't actually cheating or using exploits, you beat the boss fairly and it doesn't matter how you did it. i've beaten the game 5 times now using strength, dex, int, faith, and arcane. they all have major advantages at some points but they also have massive disadvantages at other points

Yep, It’s a much smarter implementation of an easy mode into the game and it’s also a lot of fun to try out all the ashes, and if you are feeling brave you can go solo and get a more classic souls experience.
It’s a win win for both sides of the community I believe.

@Trancestor Bosses are powerful in ER but it's not that hard to solo them. Even Malenia is a pretty fair boss to me without summons. I know it's a controversial topic. But I went to NG+7 beating Malenia each time. I used summons only on my first run.

Lately I did a last run from scratch and I still killed Malenia without summons. I used a Greatsword with bloodhound step and I did an Strenght/Ice build.

You’re thinking of spirit ashes. Ashes of war are the special ability within a weapon that can be activated by using LT/L2, and to my knowledge do not make use of summoning nor the summoning bell.

I don't think spirit ashes are necessarily the intended way to play. They're simply another tool given to you early enough that you can start expirementing with it.

I never invested in fp so I couldn't do much with them myself but I do like the two skelly spear men. They're squishy but their ability to regenerate makes them surprisingly useful as a constant decoy.

You could similarly play the whole game without leveling up. You are not interacting with the core mechanic of leveling up and thus it is a challenge run so too for the summons.

@TRVESZEKOTEK I don't think that's really true. I don't think the developer designed the game with me wearing a blind fold in mind so it clearly won't be balanced for that, but I can still do it.
