I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter
Fabian Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I′m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words oh so sweet they′re gonna knock me off my feet
A lot of kisses down at the bottom and I'll be glad I got 'em
I′m gonna smile and say I hope you′re feeling better
And close with love the way you do
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you

(I′m gonna smile and say I hope you're feeling better
And close with love the way you do)

Yeah I′m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
Yes and make believe that it came from you

Overall Meaning

In Fabian's song I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter, the lyrics describe the act of writing a letter to oneself but imagining that it came from a loved one. The singer is going to write sweet words and lots of kisses that would make him feel better. He plans to smile and say that he hopes his loved one is feeling better and end the letter with love as he usually does.

The song is a representation of the lost art of writing letters and how it can connect individuals who are far away from each other. The lyrics suggest that even though the letter was written by the singer himself, the emotions and the love conveyed are real and can give the singer hope and joy.

The song was originally written in 1935 by Fred E. Ahlert and Joe Young but has since been covered by many artists. It was popularized again in 1957 with the release of Elvis Presley's version. Other famous covers of this song include those by Fats Waller, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Paul McCartney.

I actually enjoy this awfulnes y'all are talking about. I think there's beauty in the imperfection of his voice when there's a wonderful band with him.

I know what you're saying may sound crazy to most but I totally agree with you. I personally like the songs he sings, there is no pretense by him that he can sing, and management may have tried to get him to sing better but at the time the girls didn't care and they just left it at that. I absolutely love the song "Tiger," "String Along," and a few others from him.

@marcuyttenhove9471

'Tiger' is his best song, and 'Any old time'... The rest is not so fantastic...And he still sings together with Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon.

Here's a guy who yes, can't sing very well. But how many of you dudes out there who may be good lookin' and can't sing would refuse a contract to become a singer on your looks alone? That's what I thought ... crickets, we all would! I seen an interview a few years ago that I cannot find on youtube anymore. It was Paul McCartney trashing the hell out of Fabian and Frankie Avalon because to him they had no talent at all. I mean the trashing was very mean spirited and my very first reaction was, why the hell is McCartney, who is without doubt superior to both of these guys in talent ... what the hell is he going out of his way to knock these guys? Anyway, I'm "POSITIVE" somebody close to Sir JackAss Paul must've told him how stupid and ridiculous he looked criticizing these guys that I'm sure Paul tracked the video down and bought the rights to it and I bet it won't be showing on youtube anytime soon.

@cooldaddy2877

a God-awful singer (he knew it too) but he had a great band behind him.
